Purpose: The aim of this study is to assess agreement between retrospectively and prospectively collected patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) following hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS).

Methods: Patients undergoing hip arthroscopy from 2021 to 2023 for FAIS completed preoperative PROMs, including the modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS) and the Non-Arthritic Hip Score (NAHS). Post-operatively, patients were surveyed and asked to recall their preoperative hip function.

An Eponymous History of Hemostatic, Tissue, and Reduction Clamps in Orthopedic Surgery.

Eponyms are widely used in the field of orthopedic surgery, including for surgical instruments. Although their use is at times controversial, an appreciation of the history behind eponymous terms allows one to both recognize the shortcomings of the past and simultaneously be inspired by ingenious inventors. The primary purpose of this review is to provide a historical perspective of clamps and forceps commonly used in orthopedic surgery, to better appreciate the evolution of their use over time, and to inspire innovation to constantly improve upon surgical instrumentation as the field of orthopedic surgery advances.

A 65-Year-Old Female with Missed Open Clavicle Fracture and Subsequent Fracture-Related Infection, Treated with Distal Clavicle Resection.

Introduction: Open clavicle fractures are rare, and there are no current reported cases in the literature of a missed open clavicle with resultant fracture-related infection and osteomyelitis.

Case Report: We present a 65-year-old female with no reported medical history, who presented to our institution with left clavicular pain and wound drainage 8 days after she was struck by a motor vehicle in her home country of Guyana. She was found to have a missed open clavicle fracture with an associated severe infection.

Vaccine hesitancy has played a major role in slowing the global COVID-19 response. Using cross-sectional, primarily qualitative data collected in four rural districts in Zambia, we aimed to explore community perceptions of COVID-19 disease and vaccines, including perceived motivators, cues to action, benefits, and barriers to vaccine uptake as guided by the Health Belief Model. In-depth interviews (IDIs) were conducted in late 2021 with women of reproductive age who were enrolled in an early childhood development study.

Certain cognitive factors, such as impulsivity and inhibitory control have been shown to relate to risky driving behavior and on-road risk-taking. However, existing systems fail to leverage such factors in assistive driving technologies adequately.

Background: Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in India. Clinical trials are critical for driving innovation in cancer therapy, diagnosis, and prevention. This study aims to depict the evolving landscape of cancer clinical trials in India by analysing the clinical trials registered in Clinical Trial Registry-India (CTRI).

Management of Humeral Shaft Fracture: A Network Meta-Analysis of Individual Treatment Modalities.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to perform a network meta-analysis of level I and II evidence comparing different management techniques to define the optimum treatment method for humeral shaft fractures (HSFs).

Data Sources: A systematic review of the literature using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines of MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library was screened from 2010 to 2023.

Study Selection: Inclusion criteria were evidence level I or II studies comparing nonoperative and/or operative repair techniques including open reduction internal fixation plate osteosynthesis (ORIF-Plate), minimally invasive percutaneous plating (MIPO), and intramedullary nail (IMN) fixation for the management of HSFs (OTA/AO 12A, B, C).

Gender and retention patterns among U.S. faculty.

Women remain underrepresented among faculty in nearly all academic fields. Using a census of 245,270 tenure-track and tenured professors at United States-based PhD-granting departments, we show that women leave academia overall at higher rates than men at every career age, in large part because of strongly gendered attrition at lower-prestige institutions, in non-STEM fields, and among tenured faculty. A large-scale survey of the same faculty indicates that the reasons faculty leave are gendered, even for institutions, fields, and career ages in which retention rates are not.

Background: Several risk factors have been identified for the development of postoperative shoulder stiffness, and there has been increasing interest in orthopedic literature regarding patient-reported allergy (PRA) as an identifiable risk factor for adverse outcomes. Angiotensin Receptor Blockers and Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors Have No Significant Relationship With Postoperative Arthrofibrosis After Shoulder Arthroscopy.

Purpose: To determine the effect of perioperative angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) or angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) on postoperative arthrofibrosis, as defined by requiring manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) or new diagnosis of adhesive capsulitis (AC) following arthroscopic shoulder procedures.

Methods: Patients were retrospectively identified using Current Procedural Terminology surgical billing codes to identify patients who underwent any shoulder arthroscopic procedure at a single urban academic institution from 2012 to 2020 with a minimum 2-year follow-up. Patients were excluded if <30 years old at time of surgery, as these patients rarely use ARB and ACEi medications, or if they had pre-existing AC.

Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate patient outcomes following arthroscopic surgical management for a humeral avulsion of the glenohumeral ligament (HAGL) lesion.

Methods: Based on PRISMA guidelines, two independent reviewers performed a literature search to isolate studies on arthroscopic HAGL repair. The functional outcomes, return to play (RTP), and recurrent instability from each study were extracted and analyzed.

Background: The rate of operative fixation of acute midshaft clavicle fractures has exponentially increased in recent years; however, the rate of reoperation for symptomatic hardware removal remains high and the optimal fixation strategy unknown. This systematic review aimed to summarize available evidence for dual plating of acute displaced midshaft clavicle fractures.

Methods: EMBASE, MEDLINE, and PubMed searches identified clinical studies evaluating dual plate fixation of acute midshaft clavicle fractures.

Socioeconomic roots of academic faculty.

Despite the special role of tenure-track faculty in society, training future researchers and producing scholarship that drives scientific and technological innovation, the sociodemographic characteristics of the professoriate have never been representative of the general population. Here we systematically investigate the indicators of faculty childhood socioeconomic status and consider how they may limit efforts to diversify the professoriate. Combining national-level data on education, income and university rankings with a 2017-2020 survey of 7,204 US-based tenure-track faculty across eight disciplines in STEM, social science and the humanities, we show that faculty are up to 25 times more likely to have a parent with a Ph.

Feasibility and Acceptability of Using Television Clips to Teach Communication Skills.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to conduct an innovative seminar that was developed by using clips from the television program ER to teach/reinforce key concepts of effective communication for didactic phase physician assistant (PA) students.

Methods: Interactive, 2-hour , small group seminars were conducted as part of the PA curriculum. Demographic data, as well as information about prior exposure to medical-related television shows and interest in specific medical disciplines, were collected at baseline.

Disrupting White racial dominance: How White antiracists challenge the racial status quo in interpersonal relationships.

As White activists are growing the racial justice movement, their antiracism frequently disrupts the racial hierarchy, which features whiteness in a dominant role, especially in interpersonal relationships. We investigate how White antiracists disrupt whiteness in interpersonal relationships. We interviewed 16 White antiracists who had experienced significant relationship distance due to their antiracism.

Decision-Making Regarding Newborn Circumcision: A Qualitative Analysis.

Objectives: Circumcision of newborn males is left to parental preference, as medical necessity has not been demonstrated. For medical providers seeking to help parents make decisions and provide informed consent, there is little information regarding how parents gather and process information about circumcision. This study aimed to characterize the comprehensive range of parental attitudes, gaps in knowledge, and decision-making regarding circumcision.

Hidden Charge Order in an Iron Oxide Square-Lattice Compound.

Since the discovery of charge disproportionation in the FeO_{2} square-lattice compound Sr_{3}Fe_{2}O_{7} by Mössbauer spectroscopy more than fifty years ago, the spatial ordering pattern of the disproportionated charges has remained "hidden" to conventional diffraction probes, despite numerous x-ray and neutron scattering studies. We have used neutron Larmor diffraction and Fe K-edge resonant x-ray scattering to demonstrate checkerboard charge order in the FeO_{2} planes that vanishes at a sharp second-order phase transition upon heating above 332 K. Stacking disorder of the checkerboard pattern due to frustrated interlayer interactions broadens the corresponding superstructure reflections and greatly reduces their amplitude, thus explaining the difficulty of detecting them by conventional probes.
