Stem cell-derived islets (SC-islets) consists of multiple hormone-producing cell types and offer a promising therapeutic avenue for treating type 1 diabetes (T1D). Currently, the composition of cell types generated within these SC-islets currently cannot be controlled via soluble factors during this differentiation process and consist of off-target cell types. In this study, we devised a magnetic-activated cell sorting (MACS) protocol to enrich SC-islets for CD49a, a marker associated with functional insulin-producing β cells.

Abrupt permafrost thaw drives spatially heterogeneous soil moisture and carbon dioxide fluxes in upland tundra.

Permafrost thaw causes the seasonally thawed active layer to deepen, causing the Arctic to shift toward carbon release as soil organic matter becomes susceptible to decomposition. Ground subsidence initiated by ice loss can cause these soils to collapse abruptly, rapidly shifting soil moisture as microtopography changes and also accelerating carbon and nutrient mobilization. The uncertainty of soil moisture trajectories during thaw makes it difficult to predict the role of abrupt thaw in suppressing or exacerbating carbon losses.

Increase in longevity and amelioration of pesticide toxicity by natural levels of dietary phytochemicals in the honey bee, Apis mellifera.

For the past decade, migratory beekeepers who provide honey bees for pollination services have experienced substantial colony losses on a recurring basis that have been attributed in part to exposure to insecticides, fungicides, or their combinations applied to crops. The phytochemicals p-coumaric acid and quercetin, which occur naturally in a wide variety of bee foods, including beebread and many types of honey, can enhance adult bee longevity and reduce the toxicity of certain pesticides. How variation in concentrations of natural dietary constituents affects interactions with xenobiotics, including synthetic pesticides, encountered in agroecosystems remains an open question.

Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging Versus MRI: Comparing the Diagnostic Performance in Assessing Treatment Response After Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy in Patients With Breast Cancer.

Objective: The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of breast-specific gamma imaging (BSGI) and breast MRI in assessing for residual tumor after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in patients with breast cancer.

Materials And Methods: A total of 114 patients underwent BSGI and MRI for initial staging as well as after undergoing NAC. Of those, 112 underwent subsequent definitive breast surgery.

Characterization of aging and solvent treatments of painted surfaces using single-sided NMR.

Typical experiments conducted with single-sided NMR are incapable of unique chemical identification and, thus, often rely on comparative measurements in scientific study. However, cultural heritage objects have unique natures and histories, making a genuine 'control' sample a rarity and complicating many scientific investigations. In this paper, we present some comparative results enabled by such a rare, control sample.

Assessing communities of practice in health policy: a conceptual framework as a first step towards empirical research.

Communities of Practice (CoPs) are groups of people that interact regularly to deepen their knowledge on a specific topic. Thanks to information and communication technologies, CoPs can involve experts distributed across countries and adopt a 'transnational' membership. This has allowed the strategy to be applied to domains of knowledge such as health policy with a global perspective.

Evidence base for children affected by HIV and AIDS in low prevalence and concentrated epidemic countries: applicability to programming guidance from high prevalence countries.

As global commitment grows to protect and support children affected by HIV and AIDS, questions remain about how best to meet the needs of these children in low prevalence settings and whether information from high prevalence countries can appropriately guide programming in these settings. A 2007 search for the evidence in low prevalence settings on situational challenges of HIV and AIDS-affected children and interventions to address these challenges identified 413 documents. They were reviewed and judged for quality of documentation and scientific rigor.

Effects of mutual health organizations on use of priority health-care services in urban and rural Mali: a case-control study.

Objective: To examine the effects of a community-based mutual health organization (MHO) on utilization of priority health services, financial protection of its members and inclusion of the poor and other target groups.

Methods: Four MHOs were established in two districts in Mali. A case-control study was carried out in which household survey data were collected from 817 MHO member households, 787 non-member households in MHO catchment areas, and 676 control households in areas without MHOs.

Nonmammographic evaluation of the extent of breast carcinoma.

The role of the breast imager has evolved beyond detecting breast cancer. With emphasis on management with breast conservation therapy, it has become imperative to image the patient preoperatively to adequately determine tumor size and to establish the presence or absence of multifocal, multicentric, or contralateral malignancy. The focus of this article was to provide a review of the current literature examining nonmammographic modalities available to the radiologist to thoroughly evaluate the newly diagnosed breast cancer patient.

The clinical significance of lung hypoexpansion in acute childhood asthma.

Background: Many children experiencing acute asthmatic episodes have chest radiographs, which may show lung hyperinflation, hypoinflation, or normal inflation. Lung hypoinflation may be a sign of respiratory fatigue and poor prognosis.

Objective: To compare the clinical course in children with asthma according to the degree of lung inflation on chest radiographs.

The impact of self-assessment on provider performance in Mali.

Improving the quality of clinical care in developing country settings is a difficult task, both in public sector settings where supervision is infrequent and in private sector settings where supervision and certification are non-existent. This study tested a low-cost method, self-assessment, for improving the quality of care that providers offer in a peri-urban area in Mali. The study was a cross-sectional, case-control study on the impact of self-assessment on compliance with the quality of care standards.
