Correlated oxides and related heterostructures are intriguing for developing future multifunctional devices by exploiting their exotic properties, but their integration with other materials, especially on Si-based platforms, is challenging. Here, van der Waals heterostructures of La Sr MnO (LSMO) , a correlated manganite perovskite, and MoS are demonstrated on Si substrates with multiple functions. To overcome the problems due to the incompatible growth process, technologies involving freestanding LSMO membranes and van der Waals force-mediated transfer are used to fabricate the LSMO-MoS heterostructures.

As the Si-based transistors scale down to atomic dimensions, the basic principle of current electronics, which heavily relies on the tunable charge degree of freedom, faces increasing challenges to meet the future requirements of speed, switching energy, heat dissipation, and packing density as well as functionalities. Heterogeneous integration, where dissimilar layers of materials and functionalities are unrestrictedly stacked at an atomic scale, is appealing for next-generation electronics, such as multifunctional, neuromorphic, spintronic, and ultralow-power devices, because it unlocks technologically useful interfaces of distinct functionalities. MnBiTe (MBT) is the first intrinsic magnetic topological insulator with the interaction of spin-momentum locked surface electrons and intrinsic magnetism, and it exhibits novel magnetic and topological phenomena. A phase I study was conducted to determine the MTD, dose-limiting toxicities (DLT), and pharmacokinetics of fenretinide delivered as an intravenous emulsion in relapsed/refractory hematologic malignancies. Fenretinide (80-1,810 mg/m/day) was administered by continuous infusion on days 1 to 5, in 21-day cycles, using an accelerated titration design. Thrombopoietin (TPO) is a growth factor that stimulates megakaryocytes to increases platelet counts. Due to concerns around the development of autoantibodies in clinical studies of TPO, a novel peptide that bound the TPO receptor was used to develop a TPO mimetic. This peptide has no shared homology with TPO, and therefore avoids the risk of development of antibodies that cross-react with endogenous TPO.

We report the first electrochemical system for the detection of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that can accurately discriminate homozygous and heterozygous genotypes using microfluidics technology. To achieve this, our system performs real-time melting-curve analysis of surface-immobilized hybridization probes. As an example, we used our sensor to analyze two SNPs in the apolipoprotein E (ApoE) gene, where homozygous and heterozygous mutations greatly affect the risk of late-onset Alzheimer's disease.

We report the first use of ultrasonic acoustophoresis for the label-free separation of viable and nonviable mammalian cells within a microfluidic device. Cells that have undergone apoptosis are physically smaller than viable cells, and our device exploits this fact to achieve efficient sorting based on the strong size dependence of acoustic radiation forces within a microchannel. As a model, we have selectively enriched viable MCF-7 breast tumor cells from heterogeneous mixtures of viable and nonviable cells.
