Background: Pain in cancer patients has enormous impact on their quality-of-life. Radiation therapy (RT) is a cornerstone in cancer treatment. The objective of the PREDORT study is to estimate the prevalence of pain in patients attending at Radiation Oncology (RO) Services.

Chromosomal translocations are rare in the myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML). With the exception of t(3q), translocations are not explicitly considered in the cytogenetic classification of the IPSS-R and their impact on disease progression and patient survival is unknown. The present study was aimed at determining the prognostic impact of translocations in the context of the cytogenetic classification of the IPSS-R.

Reciprocal translocations in myelodysplastic syndromes and chronic myelomonocytic leukemias: review of 5,654 patients with an evaluable karyotype.

The infrequency of translocations in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and chronic myelomonocytic leukemias (CMML) makes their identification and reporting interesting for the recognition of the recurrent ones and the genes involved in these neoplasias. The aims of this study were to identify new translocations associated with MDS and CMML and to establish their frequency in a cohort of 8,016 patients from the Spanish Group of MDS database. The karyotype was evaluable in 5,654 (70%) patients.

Bronchoscopic lung volume reduction in a single-lung transplant recipient with natal lung hyperinflation: a case report.

After single lung transplantation for emphysema native lung hyperinflation is a common complication that may cause respiratory failure. Herein we have reported satisfactory bronchoscopic lung volume reduction in a left single-lung transplant recipient with native lung hyperinflation, who suffered from Medical Research Council (MRC) class 3 dyspnea and chest pain. Three endobronchial valves (Zephyr; Emphasys Medical, Redwood, Calif, United States) were placed into the segmental bronchi of the right upper lobe, using videobronchoscopy under general anesthesia.

Treatment with all-trans retinoic acid and anthracycline monochemotherapy for children with acute promyelocytic leukemia: a multicenter study by the PETHEMA Group.

Purpose: To analyze the simultaneous combination of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) and anthracycline monochemotherapy for children with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL).

Patients And Methods: Since November 1996, 66 children (younger than 18 years) with genetically proven APL received induction therapy with ATRA and idarubicin. Consolidation therapy consisted of three courses of anthracycline monochemotherapy.

[Disseminated encephalic cryptococcosis as a form of presentation of idiopathic T-CD4 lymphocytopenia].

Introduction: The term idiopathic T-CD4 lymphocytopenia is used to describe a new syndrome, defined as reduced T-CD4 lymphocytes in persons with no evidence of HIV infection or other causes which would explain the immunosuppression (secondary to neoplasties, immunosuppressive treatment, hereditary immunodeficiencies, infections, etc.). The reduced number of T-CD4 lymphocytes leads to deterioration in cellular immunity and therefore this leads to a predisposition to develop tumors and opportunist infections in patients with such defects.

[Adrenal tumors in Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome. Apropos of a case].

A case of a neonate with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome is presented. Antenatal sonography detected a right adrenal cystic mass confirmed in post-natal which resolved spontaneously within 1 month. The child developed an adrenal adenoma detected by abdominal sonography at six months of surveillance.

[Ultrasonographic aspects of kidney pelvis tumors associated with infectious hydronephrosis of lithiasic origin].

The ultrasonographic findings of 4 patients with surgically confirmed urothelial tumors associated with calculic pyonephrosis are presented. All the involved were markedly enlarged and hydronephrotic with obstructive calculi, stigmata of pyonephrosis and, an echoic pelvic mass, extending in calyceas in 2 cases. The sonographic appearance correlated well with the gross pathological findings.

[Retroperitoneal lymphocele occurring in a child after nephrectomy and treated by percutaneous drainage].

Lymphocele is a rare complication of kidney surgery in pediatric practice. Recent treatment consists in long term percutaneous drainage. The case reported was diagnosed 9 years after nephrectomy and improved with 3 weeks percutaneous drainage.

[Giant lobar emphysema. The cause of a compressive hemithoracic opacity in a newborn infant].

The authors describe a case of congenital lobar emphysema of the upper right pulmonary lobe discovered at birth with an opaque hemithorax and a shift of mediastinum. The diagnosis was confirmed by a CT-scan. A lobectomy was performed at 6 weeks of age.

[Scapular exostosis complicated by bursitis. Apropos of a case].

We present one case of bursa formation secondary to a scapular osteochondroma. This rare condition can simulate, clinically and radiologically, a sarcomatous transformation. CT scan is helpful to demonstrate the scapular osteochondroma and the adjacent bursa.

Primary amenorrhea-galactorrhea with hyperprolactinemia and huge pituitary enlargement in juvenile primary hypothyroidism.

We report a girl with juvenile primary hypothyroidism revealed by growth retardation and a syndrome of primary amenorrhea-galactorrhea with hyperprolactinemia and suprasellar pituitary enlargement. Resolution of the pituitary enlargement and the amenorrhea-galactorrhea syndrome occurred after thyroid hormone replacement. No similar observation has been reported earlier in juvenile hypothyroidism.

[Kidney carbuncle: diagnostic, bacteriological and therapeutic considerations. Apropos of 11 cases].

Renal carbuncle is a cortical lesion following bacteremia, occurring in patient without any urologic known problems. The analysis of 11 consecutive renal carbuncles showed that one should consider the diagnosis of renal carbuncle in young patients with flank pain, fever, and absence of significant leucocyturia. Our study confirms that renal carbuncle is always caused by staphylococcus aureus and that treatment is based on appropriate antibiotherapy.

Juvenile idiopathic chronic calcifying pancreatitis: report of 10 cases from central Tunisia.

A series of 10 cases of chronic calcifying pancreatitis from central Tunisia are reported. The mean age at presentation was 23 years and the male to female ratio was 1.5.

[Percutaneous nephrostomy and emergency drainage in obstructive anuria].

Sonography seems in patients with acute renal failure a reliable method for diagnosing urinary tract obstruction, giving the kidney size and localizing the kidney for percutaneous drainage. Percutaneous nephrostomy is actually the best temporary derivation for patients with obstructive anuria before definitive treatment. 18 cases of obstructive anuria are reviewed.

[Exogastric cystic schwannoma. Observation of a case].

The authors report a case of giant gastric schwannoma with dominating extra-gastric development and a cystic component simulating a pancreatic pseudo-cyst on ultrasound and computed tomography examination, the diagnosis was made only at surgery that consisted in total gastrectomy. The rarity of these tumors, their diagnostic difficulties and the particularities of their surgical treatment are outlined.

[Prostatic abscess. Apropos of 2 cases].

Prostatic abscess in an acute inflammatory condition in which clinical diagnosis is not always easy. Ultrasound is of considerable help in diagnosis of this prostatic pathology. We report two cases.

[Clostridium perfringens septicemia].

We report 3 cases of Clostridium perfringens bacteremia with uterine gas gangrene. Clinical presentation included severe infectious syndrome, hemoglobinemia and hemoglobinuria, jaundice, uterine tenderness and hypertension. All 3 cases were first seen with installed renal failure.
