Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are manifestations of the metabolic syndrome. CVD remains the number one cause of mortality in the West, while NAFLD is the most common liver disease. Growing evidence suggests that polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) influence risk factors including circulating lipids and inflammation on the development of CVD and NAFLD.

We provide an integrated methodology able to deal both with the ill-conditioning issues associated with material heterogeneities, contact boundary conditions which are one of the main sources of inaccuracies, and cutting which is one of the most challenging issues in interactive simulations. Our approach is based on an implicit time integration of a non-linear finite element model.

Purpose Of The Review: This review was conducted to determine the ethical acceptability of prescribing generic immunosuppressive drugs to renal transplant patients.
Sources Of Information: The literature search was conducted using Pubmed and Google Scholar.
Findings: The use of generic immunosuppressive drugs (ISDs) in transplantation is a controversial topic.
Background: Quality of life (QOL) of patients receiving home parenteral nutrition (HPN) may be impacted by device technology. Historically, our HPN patients used pole-mounted pumps which can hinder activities and affect QOL.
Methods: Patients receiving HPN with a pole-mounted pump completed Short Form 36 (SF-36®) and pump-specific questionnaires.
Background: Malnutrition is common in acute care hospitals worldwide and nutritional status can deteriorate during hospitalisation. The aim of the present qualitative study was to identify enablers and challenges and, specifically, the activities, processes and resources, from the perspective of nutrition care personnel, required to provide quality nutrition care.
Methods: Eight hospitals participating in the Nutrition Care in Canadian Hospitals study provided focus group data (n = 8 focus groups; 91 participants; dietitians, dietetic interns, diet technicians and menu clerks), which were analysed thematically.
Obesity is associated with a chronic, low-grade, systemic inflammation that may contribute to the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Resveratrol, a natural compound with anti-inflammatory properties, is shown to improve glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity in obese mice and humans. Here, we tested the effect of a 2-year resveratrol administration on proinflammatory profile and insulin resistance caused by a high-fat, high-sugar (HFS) diet in white adipose tissue (WAT) from rhesus monkeys.

We studied the organization and dynamics of the actin network in nonadhesive regions of cells bridging fibronectin-coated adhesive strips. The network was formed by actin nodes associated with and linked by myosin II and containing the formin disheveled-associated activator of morphogenesis 1 (DAAM1) and the cross-linker filamin A (FlnA).

A migrating cell is a molecular machine made of tens of thousands of short-lived and interacting parts. Understanding migration means understanding the self-organization of these parts into a system of functional units. This task is one of tackling complexity: First, the system integrates numerous chemical and mechanical component processes.

Background: Idiopathic CD4 lymphocytopenia is an immunodeficiency disorder with low absolute CD4 T-lymphocyte count with no evidence of human immunodeficiency virus or other known cause.
Case: A 22-year-old woman presented with a high-grade Pap test result. Work-up demonstrated cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 3 and vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia 3 with extensive condyloma.
Background: Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) pathway blockade is a potential strategy for asthma treatment because the main activities of TSLP are activation of myeloid dendritic cells (mDCs) and modulation of cytokine production by mast cells. TSLP-activated mDCs prime the differentiation of naive T cells into inflammatory TH2 cells.
Objective: We sought to investigate mechanisms underlying the development of allergic lung inflammation in cynomolgus monkeys using gene expression profiling and to assess the effect of thymic stromal lymphopoietin receptor (TSLPR) blockade in this model.
Background: The number of elderly (≥75 years) patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) has increased markedly, including in the Limousin region, which has the oldest population in France. We retrospectively compared outcomes in elderly and non-elderly ESRD patients who started dialysis during two time periods.
Methods: Baseline clinical characteristics, care, and survival rates were assessed in 557 ESRD patients aged ≥75 and <75 years who started dialysis in 2002-2004 and 2005-2007.
Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecologic malignancy in the United States but it remains poorly understood at the molecular level. This investigation was conducted to specifically assess whether gene expression changes underlie the clinical and pathologic factors traditionally used for determining treatment regimens in women with stage I endometrial cancer. These include the effect of tumor grade, depth of myometrial invasion and histotype.

Therapeutic strategies to promote natural Aβ clearance mechanisms, such as the protein apolipoprotein-E (APOE), hold promise for the treatment of AD. The amount of APOE in the brain is regulated by nuclear receptors including retinoid X receptors (RXRs).

The calcium release-activated calcium (CRAC/ORAI) channels, which act upstream of calcineurin, are essential for calcium entry and CD4(+) T-cell activation. Although cyclosporine A has also been shown to inhibit FoxP3(+) Tregs both in vitro and in vivo, the role of ORAI channel inhibition in natural Tregs (nTregs) or inducible Tregs (iTregs) has not been investigated.

The objective of this investigation was to determine whether gene expression among endometrial cancers is different between Blacks and Whites.
Methods: Fresh frozen tumors from 25 Black patients were matched by stage, grade, and histology to endometrial cancer specimens from 25 White patients.
The preclinical model of bleomycin-induced lung fibrosis, used to investigate mechanisms related to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), has incorrectly predicted efficacy for several candidate compounds suggesting that it may be of limited value. As an attempt to improve the predictive nature of this model, integrative bioinformatic approaches were used to compare molecular alterations in the lungs of bleomycin-treated mice and patients with IPF. Using gene set enrichment analysis we show for the first time that genes differentially expressed during the fibrotic phase of the single challenge bleomycin model were significantly enriched in the expression profiles of IPF patients.

Animal studies suggest that the hepatic ratio of phosphatidylcholine (PC) to phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) contributes to steatogenesis and inflammation. This ratio may be influenced by dysregulation of the PE N-methyltransferase (PEMT) pathway or by a low-choline diet.

Aim: We aimed to assess the impact of sildenafil on vaginal lubrication according to the hormonal status and to determine the role of the neuronal isoform of NOS (nNOS).
Methods: Four-week-old C57/BL6 female mice were sham operated or ovariectomized.
Unlabelled: Despite evidence that the intestinal microbiota (IM) is involved in the pathogenesis of obesity, the IM composition of patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has not been well characterized. This prospective, cross-sectional study was aimed at identifying differences in IM between adults with biopsy-proven NAFLD (simple steatosis [SS] or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis [NASH]) and living liver donors as healthy controls (HC). Fifty subjects were included: 11 SS, 22 NASH, and 17 HC.

Choline is known to occur in high concentrations in seminal fluid and the Florence Iodine test for its detection has been used in forensic science for many years, however very little is documented regarding its sensitivity and specificity in forensic casework. This paper describes the optimisation of the choline Florence Iodine test (FI) and investigates the sensitivity and specificity of the test against different body fluids, food and drink substances, cleaning products and laboratory chemicals.

Here, we compared the effects of a novel, potent and selective CRAC current inhibitor, 2,6-Difluoro-N-{5-[4-methyl-1-(5-methyl-thiazol-2-yl)-1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-pyridin-3-yl]-pyrazin-2-yl}-benzamide (RO2959), on T cell effector functions with that of a previously reported CRAC channel inhibitor, YM-58483, and a calcineurin inhibitor Cyclosporin A (CsA). Using both electrophysiological and calcium-based fluorescence measurements, we showed that RO2959 is a potent SOCE inhibitor that blocked an IP3-dependent current in CRAC-expressing RBL-2H3 cells and CHO cells stably expressing human Orai1 and Stim1, as well as SOCE in human primary CD4(+) T cells triggered by either TCR stimulation or thapsigargin treatment.
