Solid-waste management poses significant challenges in low-income countries like Uganda, particularly in urban slum areas, where simple strategies like waste segregation and recycling have not been widely adopted.
A qualitative study in Kampala slums revealed that effective recycling practices depend on factors such as the availability of segregation containers, social support networks, and financial incentives, but these practices are not yet routine.
To improve recycling efforts, comprehensive collaboration between the public and private sectors is essential for developing relevant policies, increasing community awareness, and establishing sustainable markets for recycled products.
