Orbital abscess of odontogenic origin. Case report and review of the literature.

A case is discussed of a patient with an orbital cellulitis and a post septal abscess secondary to infection from an upper molar tooth. Spread of infection was to the maxillary sinus and thence to the orbit via a defect in the orbital floor. The clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, value of CT scanning, treatment and possible complications are reviewed.

Cyclic nucleotide responses in control and cystic fibrosis labial glands.

Adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) and guanosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cGMP) levels were measured in labial gland slices from controls and patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Hypertension registers in general practice: levels of control and nondrug management.

Sixty-five general practitioners throughout Northland agreed to establish and maintain hypertension registers for a three year trial period beginning in 1982. Opportunistic blood pressure screening was undertaken of all patients aged 20-69 attending practices for whatever reason. Patients with an average of six readings on at least three separate occasions which exceeded WHO criteria for hypertension (diastolic blood pressure greater than 95 mmHg and/or systolic blood pressure greater than 160 mmHg) were entered onto the registers as were patients already receiving antihypertensive drugs.

Kaposi's sarcoma of the palate in a patient with AIDS: an unusual presentation.

Kaposi's sarcoma formerly a rare tumour in the western world, is now found frequently in homosexual patients with the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. A common site of occurrence is the mouth. The characteristic intra-oral appearance of the lesion is of a flat or raised pigmented lesion.

Characterization of the genome of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteriophage phi PLS27 with particular reference to the ends of the DNA.

The DNA of Pseudomonas aeruginosa rough-specific bacteriophage phi PLS27 was studied. The genome size as determined by summing the sizes of restriction fragments was 42.7 kilobase pairs.

Potassium release in labial glands from controls and patients with cystic fibrosis.

Labial glands from patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) were tested for a disease-related decrease in cholinergically-induced K release. Labial gland slices from normal controls and patients with cystic fibrosis were incubated in vitro in the presence or absence of cholinergic and adrenergic agonists and with or without a phosphodiesterase inhibitor. Both control and CF glands released K in response to cholinergic stimulation only; no K release response was detected to alpha- or beta- adrenergic stimulation.

Heat shock response of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The role of prophylactic brain irradiation in limited stage small cell lung cancer: clinical, neuropsychologic, and CT sequelae.

Ninety-four patients with limited stage small cell lung cancer treated between 1981 and 1985 with a regimen including prophylactic brain irradiation (PBI) after combination chemotherapy were assessed for compliance with PBI, brain relapse, and neurologic morbidity. Seventy-seven percent of patients had PBI and of these, 22% developed brain metastases after a median time of 11 months post treatment. The brain was the apparent unique initial site of relapse in 10% of PBI cases but more commonly brain relapse was preceded or accompanied by failure at other sites, especially the chest.

Pulmonary fungal infections after bone marrow transplantation.

Of 319 pediatric patients treated with bone marrow transplantation (BMT) during a 10-year period, 27 developed pulmonary fungal infections (PFI). Only 2 patients (7%) survived. Twenty-three patients (85%) had been treated with systemic antifungal therapy immediately before or at the time of diagnosis.

Autonomic regulation of potassium release from human labial salivary glands in vitro.

Labial salivary-gland slices from normal human subjects were incubated in vitro according to various protocols. The autonomic regulation of these was significantly different from that of most major salivary glands. K release was stimulated by incubation with a cholinergic agonist but not with alpha- or beta-adrenergic agonists.

DNA-dependent RNA polymerase from Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

DNA-dependent RNA polymerase was purified from Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The subunit structure was typical of other eubacterial RNA polymerases in having beta' (157,000), beta (148,000), sigma (87,000), and alpha 2 (45,000) subunits as determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The enzyme was dependent on Mg2+, displaying optimal activity at 10 mM MgCl2.

Hepatic regenerating nodules in hereditary tyrosinemia.

Hereditary tyrosinemia is an autosomal recessive, enzymatic disorder that results in micro- and macronodular cirrhosis in early childhood. Hepatocellular carcinoma occurs in approximately one-third of affected children. We evaluated the imaging studies performed in five children with this disorder.

Primary pulmonary rhabdomyosarcoma of the lung in children. Report of two cases presenting with spontaneous pneumothorax.

This report describes two cases of pulmonary rhabdomyosarcoma occurring in children, ages 21 and 30 months at diagnosis. Both patients presented with spontaneous pneumothorax and had cystic changes in the affected lung by chest x-ray. Ultrastructural and immunohistochemical studies supported the myogenic phenotype of these neoplasms.

B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders in children after bone marrow transplantation: radiologic manifestations.

The radiographic findings in five pediatric patients in whom unregulated B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders developed following bone marrow transplantation are described. Four patients received T-cell-depleted bone marrow from mismatched donors and one received nondepleted marrow from a matched sibling donor. These disorders are similar to B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders that have been described in other immunosuppressed hosts.

Teacher awareness program on child abuse: a randomized controlled trial.

Teachers have a significant role in preventing, detecting and reporting child abuse and neglect. They are hindered in fulfilling this role by a serious lack of knowledge of the law, of school board policies, and of maltreatment. A comprehensive professional development workshop was developed and presented to elementary school teachers.

MR evaluation of the portal vein in pediatric liver transplant candidates.

Nine pediatric liver transplant candidates underwent preoperative MR evaluation of the portal vein and the inferior vena cava. Sonographic correlation was available in all patients and angiographic correlation was available in five. Pathologic correlation was obtained in seven cases either at liver transplantation or autopsy.

Human pancreatic secretory protein profiles in pancreas cancer and chronic pancreatitis.

Pancreatic secretory protein profiles differed significantly between patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP) and pancreatic carcinoma (CA). Specific regions of the patterns were altered when CP versus CA and when CP versus normals were compared. Bands isoelectric in the region of pH 9-11 were elevated in CP.
