Mosquitoes threaten over half of the world's population through vectored diseases such as malaria, zika, yellow fever, dengue, and chikungunya. Mosquitoes have a highly developed olfactory system attuned to chemotaxis relating to host-seeking, mating, and oviposition behavior. In this study, we aimed to determine the spatial efficacy of 2 plant-based repellent blends (Blend3 and Blend4 that had previously been found to successfully repel Aedes, Anopheles and Culex mosquitoes in wind tunnel assays) in excluding Aedes aegypti from the window entry.

  • Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common and troubling problem that can happen after surgery, leading to bad outcomes for patients and extra costs for hospitals.
  • The Safe Brain Initiative care bundle (SBI-CB) was tested in this study to see if it could help reduce POD in patients after surgery.
  • The study found that many patients (16.36%) still experienced POD, especially younger and older people, and those who had longer surgeries under general anesthesia were at higher risk.

This article aims to introduce the Safe Brain Initiative (SBI) approach, focusing on collecting and leveraging Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) to enhance patient-centred precision anaesthesia and prevent postoperative delirium (POD) and neurocognitive disorders (NCD). The SBI was implemented to systematically address the feedback gap in perioperative care by collecting and analysing real-world data. The initiative focuses on monitoring and preventing POD and NCD, providing effective anaesthesia care, assessing patient and team satisfaction, and evaluating environmental sustainability impact.

Purpose: Patient blood management (PBM) is a patient-centered, evidence-based, multidisciplinary approach aimed at optimizing hemoglobin concentration, ensuring the continuity of hemostasis and minimizing blood loss in patients undergoing surgery. The aims of this study were: (1) to explore the cost-effectiveness of comprehensive anemia management, the first pillar of PBM, in non-cardiac and cardiac surgery from the Turkish Social Security Institution's (SSI's) perspective; and (2) to explore the potential budget impact of PBM for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and hip and knee arthroplasty to the SSI.

Methods: Cost-effectiveness and budget impact models were developed based on the avoided postoperative adverse events following implementation of the first pillar of PBM for non-cardiac and cardiac surgical patients.

Cancer related thrombotic microangiopathies usually cause a diagnostic dilemma for hematologists and clinicians. In this case report, we presented a fifty-nine-year-old man who was admitted to our hospital with microangiopathic hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia due to the carcinoma metastasis to the bone marrow. As a result of rapid evaluations, it was revealed that the histological subtype of the cancer was signet ring cell carcinoma, and despite all the interventions, the patient died at a very short time after the initial presentation.

Background: Simulation-based education has become the most important part of resident training in anesthesiology, especially during the pandemic. It allows learning the skills and the management of different situations without putting residents in risk of contamination, considering COVID-19 is highly contagious. The hypothesis was that simulation is still associated with improvement of knowledge acquisitions despite the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: A fixed dose combination (FDC) product containing two components can be authorized for the use in 3 conceptual scenarios (1) as substitution for a treatment regimen containing both components given separately (substitution therapy) or (2) as replacement for a treatment regimen where the patient currently receives one of the components (add-on therapy) or (3) initial treatment of patients naïve to both components (initial combination therapy).

Method: Trends in European Medicine Agency (EMA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approvals of FDC products for the 3 scenarios were explored by comparing the therapeutic indications retrieved from the EMA and FDA websites for FDCs approved between January 2000 and April 2017 within 5 selected therapeutic areas: type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.

Result: Approval decisions between EMA and FDA were largely aligned for the substitution therapy and add-on therapy scenarios.

Background: Anatomical variation in the internal jugular vein (IJV), as well as its small size, tendency to collapse, and proximity to the common carotid artery (CCA) makes central venous cannulation via the IJV a technically challenging procedure, especially in pediatric patients.

Aim: We evaluated the effects of laryngeal mask airway insertion and endotracheal intubation (ETT) on the anatomical relationship between the IJV and the CCA in neutral and 40° head away positions.

Method: After parental consent 92 patients with ASA physical status I-II, aged 0-17, undergoing elective urological surgery were enrolled and divided into two groups according to the airway management device used for anesthesia: Group laryngeal mask airway (n = 63) and Group ETT (n = 29).
