Wnt inhibitor screen reveals iron dependence of β-catenin signaling in cancers.

Excessive signaling from the Wnt pathway is associated with numerous human cancers. Using a high throughput screen designed to detect inhibitors of Wnt/β-catenin signaling, we identified a series of acyl hydrazones that act downstream of the β-catenin destruction complex to inhibit both Wnt-induced and cancer-associated constitutive Wnt signaling via destabilization of β-catenin. We found that these acyl hydrazones bind iron in vitro and in intact cells and that chelating activity is required to abrogate Wnt signaling and block the growth of colorectal cancer cell lines with constitutive Wnt signaling.

Potential of microalgae and lactobacilli in biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles.

Introduction: Application of nanoparticles has been extensively increased in last decades. Nanoparticles of noble metals such as gold, platinum and especially silver are widely applied in medical and pharmaceutical applications. Although, variety of physical and chemical methods has been developed for production of metal nanoparticles, because of destructive effects of them on environment, biosynthetic methods have been suggested as a novel alternative.

Plasma oxidized LDL and thiol-containing molecules in patients with exudative age-related macular degeneration.

Purpose: It was proposed that total thiols (tSH) as powerful reducing agents and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (OX-LDL) may be associated with development of choroidal neovascularization in exudative age-related macular degeneration (E-ARMD).

Methods: In a case-control study, 45 patients with E-ARMD were compared with 45 sex- and age-matched healthy controls. The levels of plasma homocysteine (Hcy) and OX-LDL as oxidant agents, and of tSH and glutathione (GSH) as antioxidant markers, were estimated in E-ARMD patients and controls.

Comparison of 16S rDNA-PCR Amplification and Culture of Cerebrospinal Fluid for Diagnosis of Bacterial Meningitis.

Objective: Early and accurate diagnosis of bacterial meningitis is of critical concern. Optimum and rapid laboratory facilities are not routinely available for detecting the etiologic agents of meningitis. The objective of this study was to compare polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay with culture for detection of bacteria in central nervous system (CNS) samples from patients suspected to have meningitis.

A genome-scale genetic interaction map was constructed by examining 5.4 million gene-gene pairs for synthetic genetic interactions, generating quantitative genetic interaction profiles for approximately 75% of all genes in the budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. A network based on genetic interaction profiles reveals a functional map of the cell in which genes of similar biological processes cluster together in coherent subsets, and highly correlated profiles delineate specific pathways to define gene function.

Assessing the metabolic and toxic effects of anticonvulsant doses of polyunsaturated fatty acids on the liver in rats.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), at high doses, have been demonstrated to possess anticonvulsant properties in animal seizure models. Little is known, however, about the possible metabolic or adverse effects of PUFA at these high, anticonvulsant doses. The goal of the present study was to assess the metabolic and potential adverse effects of high-dose PUFA administration to rats.

Fish oil supplementation decreases serum soluble receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand/osteoprotegerin ratio in female patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Objective: Soluble receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand (sRANKL) to osteoprotegerin ratio is designated as a bone metabolism equation in many rheumatologic disorders and would be modified with fish oil (FO) supplementation.

Design And Methods: Eighty-three females with rheumatoid arthritis were divided randomly to 40 and 43 patients treated with (1 g/day) or without FO for 3 months accompanied with conventional drugs, respectively. Osteoprotegerin, sRANKL, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) serum levels were measured before and after treatment.

A computational study on some viable targets for gas-phase synthesis of metal complexes of the cyclic (B6C)-2 and their bonding pattern.

In this account, a detailed computational study is conducted to verify the geometric, energetic, and electronic properties of the planar cyclic (B 6C) (-2) (as the simplest carrier of hexacoordinate carbon) within some metal complexes. The [M(B 6C)] ((-)) (M = Li, Na, K) and [M(B 6C)] (M = Be, Mg, Ca) series are employed for this purpose. Relevant ab initio calculations at both DFT and post-HF levels vividly demonstrate that this dianion is stabilized considerably in the electric field generated by cations, whereas the geometrical and electronic properties of this ring remain almost intact in these complexes.

Effects of 2 educational methods on the knowledge, attitude, and practice of women high school teachers in prevention of cervical cancer.

Because of the increased emphasis on prevention and early detection of cervical cancer, we studied the effects of 2 educational methods on the knowledge, attitude, and practice, as regards prevention of cervical cancer, of women high school teachers in Tabriz. This study was a semiexperimental research. Samples were 129 female teachers divided in 3 groups: experimental 1 (educated by pamphlets), experimental 2 (educated by a lecture and flash cards), and control group (not manipulated).

Isolation and characterisation of the Photosystem two reaction centre complex from a double mutant of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

A rapid procedure has been developed for the isolation of the photosystem two reaction centre complex (PS II RC) from a double mutant of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, F54-14, which lacks the Photosystem one complex and the chloroplast ATPase. Thylakoid membranes are solubilised with 1.5% (w/v) Triton X-100 and the PS II RC purified by anion-exchange chromatography using TSK DEAE-650(S) (Merck).

Nucleotide sequence of the psbE, psbF and trnM genes from the chloroplast genome of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

We have determined the nucleotide sequences of the psbE and psbF genes, which encode the alpha and beta subunits, respectively, of cytochrome b-559, from the chloroplast genome of the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. In contrast to other organisms psbE is not co-transcribed with psbF. The primary structures of the gene products are very similar to the equivalent proteins in cyanobacteria and plants.
