Implementation of a nurse-led paediatric epistaxis clinic at a tertiary hospital.

Introduction: Referrals for recurrent epistaxis constitute a significant proportion of paediatric ENT consultations. In order to improve access to secondary care, a nurse-led paediatric epistaxis clinic (NPEC) was developed in collaboration with ENT specialist nurses. The purpose of this study was to describe the structure of NPEC at our institution and to assess the impact including safety, parental satisfaction and referral-to-clinic times.

Identifying Chemistry Students' Baseline Systems Thinking Skills When Constructing System Maps for a Topic on Climate Change.

New resources have recently been emerging for educators to implement systems thinking (ST) in chemistry education, including a proposed set of ST skills. While these efforts aim to make ST implementation easier, little is known about how to assess these skills in a chemistry context. In this study, we investigated ST skills employed by students who constructed system maps of a topic related to climate change.

Feeling stretched: Parents' narratives about challenges to resilience when their child has a tracheostomy.

This study aimed to examine how parents develop personal resilience when facing the challenges of caring for a child with tracheostomy. This study employed a longitudinal qualitative design. Unstructured narrative interviews with 12 parents (from nine families) whose child had a new tracheostomy were undertaken at three time points over 12 months.

Caring for a child with a tracheostomy can be challenging for parents and learning to safely manage their child's airway can be frightening due to their child's breathing issues, complex diagnosis and the difficult decisions they have to make. The aim of this longitudinal narrative study was to tell the stories of parents whose child had a new tracheostomy. Twenty three narrative interviews were conducted with twelve parents from nine families at three time points over a 12 month period.

Tafamidis is approved in over 40 countries to delay neurologic progression in patients with transthyretin amyloid polyneuropathy (ATTR-PN). A comprehensive, integrated analysis of safety data from interventional, observational and surveillance studies of tafamidis in ATTR-PN patients was conducted. Safety data from all sponsored, completed, or ongoing, Phase 2/3 studies of tafamidis in ATTR-PN patients as of 3 January 2017 were pooled.

Unlabelled: Transthyretin amyloidosis is a rare, life-threatening disease resulting from aggregation and deposition of transthyretin amyloid fibrils in various tissues. There are 2 predominate phenotypic presentations of the disease: transthyretin familial amyloid polyneuropathy, which primarily affects the peripheral nerves, and transthyretin cardiomyopathy (TTR-CM), which primarily affects the heart. However, there is a wide overlap with symptoms at presentation and disease course being highly variable and influenced by the underlying transthyretin mutation, age of the affected individual, sex, and geographic location.

Open-Label, Randomized Study of Transition From Tacrolimus to Sirolimus Immunosuppression in Renal Allograft Recipients.

Unlabelled: Calcineurin inhibitor-associated nephrotoxicity and other adverse events have prompted efforts to minimize/eliminate calcineurin inhibitor use in kidney transplant recipients.

Methods: This open-label, randomized, multinational study evaluated the effect of planned transition from tacrolimus to sirolimus on kidney function in renal allograft recipients. Patients received tacrolimus-based immunosuppression and then were randomized 3 to 5 months posttransplantation to transition to sirolimus or continue tacrolimus.

Developing a nurse-delivered frenulotomy service.

Objectives: Tongue tie (ankyloglossia) describes a short lingual frenulum that can lead to breastfeeding difficulties. It affects between 4% and 10% of infants and can be treated by frenulotomy. We developed a nurse-delivered frenulotomy service at a tertiary pediatric hospital and audited our results.

Single-isomer trisubstituted olefins from a novel reaction of (E)-beta-chloro-alpha-iodo-alpha,beta-unsaturated esters and amides.

(E)-beta-chloro-alpha-iodo-alpha,beta-unsaturated esters are converted to single isomer trisubstituted olefins bearing three different carbon substituents by cross-coupling under reflux. Mechanistic investigations suggest that this process transfers a hydrogen from the boronic acid to the alpha-position of the substrate and then introduces an aryl group to the beta-position of the intermediate template while replacing chloride. The reaction is highly stereoselective, showing preference for the E-isomer.

The clinical and histopathological effects of prednisone on acute radiation-induced dermatitis in dogs: a placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind, prospective clinical trial.

This study evaluated and compared the clinical and histopathological effects of prednisone on acute radiation-induced dermatitis (ARID) in dogs treated with 48 Gray of fractionated irradiation targeted to the skin surface. The study was designed as a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled prospective clinical trial. Twenty-two otherwise healthy companion dogs completed the clinical study.

Single-isomer iodochlorination of alkynes and chlorination of alkenes using tetrabutylammonium iodide and dichloroethane.

The efficient formation of single-isomer, differentially halogenated alkenes and alkanes is described. These structures were generated by treatment of the appropriate alkyne or alkene with tetrabutylammonium iodide in refluxing dichloroethane. This process is highly selective as evidenced by control experiments using ICl.

Evaluation of ameroid ring constrictors for treatment for single extrahepatic portosystemic shunts in dogs: 168 cases (1995-2001).

Objectives: To evaluate use of an ameroid ring constrictor (ARC) for treatment for single extrahepatic portosystemic shunts (PSSs) and identify factors associated with postoperative death, continued portosystemic shunting, and long-term outcome in dogs.

Design: Retrospective study.

Animals: 168 dogs with a single extrahepatic PSS.
