Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigated the effectiveness of combining habit reversal therapy (HRT) with acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for reducing tic severity in adults with Tourette's syndrome.
  • - Participants were assessed for tic severity at multiple points (baseline, post-treatment, 6 months, and 12 months) using the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) and video evaluations, demonstrating significant reductions in tics.
  • - The results indicate that the HRT + ACT approach not only effectively lowered tic severity following treatment but also maintained these improvements for up to 12 months, suggesting it's worth exploring further in comparison to HRT alone.

Objectives/hypothesis: Placement of a Passy-Muir speaking valve is considered best practice for infants and children with a tracheostomy. The Passy-Muir valve enables phonation by redirecting exhaled air via the glottis. Poor tolerance of the Passy-Muir valve is associated with excessive transtracheal pressures on exhalation due to upper airway obstruction.
