Interobserver and intraobserver reliability of different methods of examination for presence of palmaris longus and examination of fifth superficial flexor function.

The palmaris longus is harvested as a tendon graft in various surgical procedures. Several tests are used to assess the presence of palmaris longus tendon. In the present study, we attempted to assess the interobserver and intraobserver reliability of five of the most famous methods and also the examination of fifth superficial flexor function.

Comparison of intramedullary nail and plating in treatment of diaphyseal tibial fractures with intact fibulae: A randomized controlled trial.

Background: Tibial fracture without concomitant fibular fracture is an injury that has long attracted notice for the fact that it sometimes heals cleanly, other times causes various problems when the bone does not heal, or misaligns. In this randomized clinical trial, we assessed two treatment modalities plating and intramedullary nailing for treatment of closed, noncomminuted tibial fractures with intact fibulae.

Materials And Methods: During the three year period, 1470 patients with leg fractures were treated and out of which, 114 were eligible to enter the study.

Introduction of a New Suture Method in Repair of Peripheral Nerves Injured with a Sharp Mechanism.

Background: The standard method for repair of an injured peripheal nerve is epineural repair with separate sutures. Herein we describe a method in which the nerve is sutured with continous sutures. In fact this method has not been utilized for nerve repair previously and our purpose was to compare it to the standard method.

Prophylactic corticosteroid injection in ulnar wrist pain in distal radius fracture.

Background: Ulnar sided wrist pain is one of the most common complications of distal radius fractures. The simplest method for decreasing pain for this affliction is corticosteroid injection. The present study was designed to assess the effect of corticosteroid injection in the prevention of ulnar sided wrist pain.

Effectiveness of the Gastrocsoleous Flap for Coverage of Soft Tissue Defects in Leg with Emphasis on the Distal Third.

Background: The standard methods for reconstruction of soft tissue defects in the leg include gastrocnemius flap for proximal third defects, soleus flap for middle third and free flap in the distal third. However, there are problems with the use of free flap, like increased operative time, damage of major vessels and the need for experienced microsurgeon.

Methods: This prospective study was undertaken on 23 patients (20 male and 3 female) with the mean age 32.

Tourniquet in surgery of the limbs: a review of history, types and complications.

Context: A tourniquet is a device that is used frequently in most orthopaedic surgeries but this routine device can lead to serious complications so we decided to review and declare it for safe instruction and use.

Evidence Acquisition: We searched the word "tourniquet" in PubMed and Google and reviewed all full text English articles and abstracts of non-English articles. In addition, we read all the reference pages of articles to find the new references.

Presence or absence of palmaris longus and fifth superficial flexor digitorum; is there any effect on median nerve surface area in wrist sonography.

Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) describes a set of symptoms caused by compression of the median nerve in the wrist, which is the most common site of nerve compression in the upper limb. This syndrome is a primary source of pain and reduced function in these patients, and the cause is compression of the median nerve where it passes beneath the flexor retinaculum in the wrist.

Objectives: The aim of the present cross sectional study is to assess the absence of palmaris longus and fifth superficial flexor digitorum tendon as normal anatomic variations on the sonographic measurement of median nerve surface area in healthy individuals' wrists.

Effects of methylprednisolone on neuroprotective effects of delay hypothermia on spinal cord injury in rat.

Study Design: A retrospective study.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of delayed hypothermia on spinal cord injuries in rats. In addition, the effect of methylprednisolone on therapeutic window of hypothermia was evaluated.

Bilateral simultaneous femoral neck and shafts fractures - a case report.

Simultaneous fractures of the femoral neck and shaft are not common injuries, though they cannot be considered rare. Herein, we report our experience with a patient with bilateral occurance of this injury. Up to the best of our knowkedge this is the first case reported in literature in which correct diagnosis was made initially.

Outcome of tendon transfer for radial nerve paralysis: Comparison of three methods.

Background: Tendon transfer for radial nerve paralysis has a 100 years history and any set of tendons that can be considered to be useful has been utilized for the purpose. The pronator tress is used for restoration of wrist dorsiflexion, while the flexor carpi radialis, flexor carpiulnaris, and flexor digitorum superficialis are variably used in each for fingers and thumb movements. The present study was a retrospective analysis, designed to compare three methods of tendon transfer for radial nerve palsy.

Tourniquet use during plating of acute extra-articular tibial fractures: effects on final results of the operation.

Background: Tourniquet use in orthopedics is practiced for the sake of the surgeon's comfort with a bloodless field, though it is associated with potential risks. This study was performed to assess the effects of using or avoiding a tourniquet when plating acute extra-articular tibial fractures.

Patients And Methods: One hundred thirty-eight patients with acute extra-articular tibial fractures were randomized into two groups: "tourniquet" and "without tourniquet".

Concomitant dislocation of the tarsometatarsal and metatarsophalangeal joints of the second toe (floating second metatarsal): a case report.

When examining patients with injuries of the tarsometatarsal joint, the physician must pay attention to the foot as a whole. An extremely rare foot injury has been described in which axial and compressive forces cause simultaneous dislocation of the tarsometatarsal joint and the metatarsophalangeal joint of the same or adjacent ray. The following is a report of one of these rare injuries.

Neglected ankle dislocation.

Tibiotalar dislocation without concomitant fracture in the surrounding bones is a rare injury. We report this type of injury presenting unreduced after a 10-month interval. A 23-year-old woman presented to our clinic 10 months after an earthquake in Bam, Iran, during which she had sustained an anterior tibiotalar dislocation without any associated fracture.
