Complete mitochondrial sequences can be rapidly obtained and are widely available, providing a great source of species information and allowing for the discovery of new specific molecular markers. However, for some taxonomic groups, traditional approaches for species delimitation are impaired by the low genetic distance values. In these cases, other species-level markers are used.

This is the first complete mitochondrial genome of a Tityus species, although it is the most medically important genus in South America. Tityus serrulatus (Brazilian yellow scorpion) mtDNA revealed the same gene arrangement of three out of four other mitogenomes published by now for the same family (Centruroides limpidus, Mesobuthus gibbosus, M. martensii and Buthus occitanus).

Article Synopsis
  • Prochilodus spp. are key migratory freshwater fishes in Brazil, recognized for their economic and ecological significance.
  • The mitochondrial genomes of Prochilodus argenteus and Prochilodus costatus were sequenced and compared, revealing they have similar genetic structures.
  • A phylogenetic analysis confirmed that both Prochilodus and the family Prochilodontidae are monophyletic groups, suggesting strong evolutionary relationships among these species.
