Purpose: Since bladder neck dextranomer/hyaluronic acid copolymer (Deflux) injections can improve urinary incontinence of various etiologies, we hypothesized that incontinent children with bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex would benefit from dextranomer/hyaluronic acid copolymer. We aimed to analyze dextranomer/hyaluronic acid copolymer efficacy and predictors of treatment success in bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex.

In our experience, the Santulli procedure (SP) can improve bowel recovery in congenital intestinal malformations, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), and bowel perforation. All cases managed at our institution using SP between 2012 and 2017 were included in this study. Forty-one patients underwent SP (median age: 39 (0-335) days, median weight: 2987 (1400-8100) g) for intestinal atresia (51%, two gastroschisis), NEC (29%), midgut volvulus (10%), Hirschsprung's disease (5%), or bowel perforation (5%), with at least one intestinal suture below the Santulli in 10% of cases.

Accurate, real-time identification and display of critical anatomic structures, such as the nerve and vasculature structures, are critical for reducing complications and improving surgical outcomes. Human vision is frequently limited in clearly distinguishing and contrasting these structures. We present a novel imaging system, which enables noninvasive visualization of critical anatomic structures during surgical dissection.

Surgical methods guided by exogenous fluorescent markers have the potential to define tissue types in real time. Small molecule dyes with efficient and selective renal clearance could enable visualization of the ureter during surgical procedures involving the abdomen and pelvis. These studies report the design and synthesis of a water soluble, net neutral C4'-O-alkyl heptamethine cyanine, Ureter-Label (UL)-766, with excellent properties for ureter visualization.
