Purpose Of Review: Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by dopaminergic system dysfunction that results from the degeneration of neurons in the substantia nigra. However, studies suggest that other neurotransmitters, especially histamine, may also play a role in the development of PD.

Recent Findings: Numerous studies show that histamine levels in the basal ganglia significantly change in PD pathology, correlating with motor symptoms observed in animal models of PD.

Article Synopsis
  • Neuroendocrine tumors (CR-NETs) are rare in the gastrointestinal tract but can arise in various epithelial organs, prompting research into the roles of serum dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, and epinephrine in these tumors.
  • The study analyzed 25 CR-NET patients and 60 colorectal cancer patients, finding that CR-NET patients had higher serum dopamine levels, especially in early TNM stages, suggesting dopamine's potential as a prognostic marker.
  • Additionally, connections between serum dopamine, nutritional status (measured by the Prognostic Nutritional Index), and systemic inflammation indicate that these markers may assist in evaluating CR-NET patients' health and guiding treatment strategies.

Article Synopsis
  • A retrospective, observational study was conducted on 91 colorectal cancer (CRC) patients hospitalized at a county hospital in Craiova from October 2020 to October 2022, to analyze their epidemiological and clinical characteristics.
  • The average age of patients was 68.06 years, with 56.04% living in urban areas, and left colon tumors were more common (57.14%) with adenocarcinoma being the predominant type found.
  • The study highlighted various complications associated with CRC, showing higher percentages of obstructions in the left colon and hemorrhages/perforations in the right colon, validating the initial hypothesis on how clinical and pathological data can guide better treatment strategies for CRC.

One of the molecular routes of colorectal carcinogenesis is the lack of mismatch repair (MMR) proteins, which may have substantial clinical consequences in predicting therapy success. This study aimed to analyze the expression of the MutL homolog 1 (MLH1), MutS homolog 2 (MSH2), and MutS homolog 6 (MSH6) in a cohort of 91 colorectal cancer (CRC) patients, and to evaluate the relationship between patient clinicopathological characteristics and immunoexpression of these biomarkers. In this study, we obtained the highest scores of the MLH1 immunoexpression in non-mucinous tumors, moderately differentiated lesions, and in stage IV.

We intended to investigate the presence and medical application of serum hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α) along with the already known systemic inflammatory markers and the new one's inflammatory indices, the proportion of mean corpuscular volume and lymphocytes (MCVL) and the cumulative inflammatory index (IIC), for patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). We sought to establish correlations that may be present between the serum levels of HIF-1α and these inflammatory indices, as well as their relationship with disease activity and the extent of UC, which can provide us with a more precise understanding of the evolution, prognosis, and future well-being of patients. Serum samples were collected from 46 patients diagnosed with UC and 23 controls.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a frequently diagnosed and lethal disease. The risk of developing CRC is determined by environmental and genetic factors. Surgical treatment is the main curative modality for patients with CRC up to stage III.

Action video game players (AVGPs) outperform nonvideo game players (NVGPs) on a wide variety of attentional tasks, mediating benefits to perceptual and cognitive decision processes. A key issue in the literature is the extent to which such benefits transfer beyond cognition. Using steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP) as a neural measure of attentional resource allocation, we investigated whether the attentional benefit of AVGPs generalizes to the processing of rapidly presented facial emotions.

In the context of profound social, economic and financial changes, private and public organizations managers turn their attention towards the most valuable resource they have - the human resource (HR), the one that can ensure increased organizational performance. Using adequate HR policies and practices, organizations can build a positive work environment that sustains employees' development, encourages communication, innovation, and pro-active attitudes and behaviors. However, managerial practices specific to the private sector do not seem to be the solution to the problems public institutions deal with.
