Cardiac hemangioma presenting as a primary cardiac tumor.

Cardiac hemangiomas are very rare benign cardiac tumors. They can present at any age and clinical presentation varies according to location and size. We encountered an 87-year-old woman with a left atrial hemangioma clinically diagnosed as cardiac myxoma.

Ectopic thyroid tissue in the anterior mediastinum along with a normally located gland.

Ectopic thyroid tissue is a rare developmental abnormality arising from an aberration in the normal migration of the thyroid gland, from the floor of the primitive foregut to its final position. It is usually asymptomatic, often being diagnosed as an incidental finding. However, it can present with symptoms of compression such as chest pain, cough, stridor, dysphagia, dyspnea and superior vena cava syndrome.

Background: Ectopic thyroid papillary carcinoma presenting as bilateral neck lymph nodes metastasis is very rare. Ectopic thyroid tissue may appear in any location along the trajectory of the thyroglossal duct from the foramen cecum to the mediastinum. It is subject to malignant transformation and is classically accompanied by a similar transformation of the native thyroid gland.

Background: Colorectal polyps (CP) are common among individuals older than 50 years. Some polyp types can precede colorectal cancer (CRC). This study aimed at describing histopathological characteristics of colorectal polyps in relation to age and gender among symptomatic patients referred for a colonoscopy examination during 2011-2014 in Tirana, Albania.

KRAS and BRAF mutational status in colon cancer from Albanian patients.

Background: Numerous clinical studies have shown that anti-EGFR therapies are effective only in a subset of patients with colorectal cancer. Mutations in the KRAS and BRAF genes have been confirmed as negative predictors of the response to EGFR-targeted therapies.In this study we evaluated KRAS and BRAF status in 159 colorectal cancer samples obtained from the University of Tirana.

Classification of patients with breast cancer according to Nottingham prognostic index highlights significant differences in immunohistochemical marker expression.

Background: Prognosis and treatment of patients with breast carcinoma of no special type (NST) is dependent on a few established parameters, such as tumor size, histological grade, lymph node stage, expression of estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and HER-2/neu, and proliferation index. The original Nottingham Prognostic Index (NPI) employs a three-tiered classification system that stratifies patients with breast cancer into good, moderate, and poor prognostic groups. The aim of our study was to use robust immunohistochemical methodology for determination of ER, PR, HER-2/neu, Ki-67, p53, and Bcl-2, and to observe differences in the expression of these markers when patients are stratified according to the original, three-tiered Nottingham Prognostic Index.

Cystic benign teratoma of the neck in adult.

Teratomas are embryonal neoplasms that arise when totipotential germ cells escape the developmental control of primary organizers and give rise to tumors containing tissue derived from all three blastodermic layers. Teratomas have been reported to occur in various sites and organs. Teratoma of the cervical neck are relatively rare in adulthood.

Surgical removal of an intravenous leiomyoma with intracardiac extension and pulmonary benign metastases.

Intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL) with right intracardiac extension or pulmonary benign metastases (PBM) is rare. We report a case of 51 year-old woman, who underwent successful extensive double stage surgical removal of the intracardiac IVL extension associated with a pulmonary limited resection where the cystic bullae and PBM were found, and a month later gynaecological operation. To our knowledge this is the first reported case of such a combination.

Actual status of preoperative diagnosis of thyroid cancer in Albania.

Introduction: Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy and accounts for almost 1% of human cancer. It is well known that the majority of cases occur in women in the middle decades of life. Thyroid cancer is a relatively rare disease; on the other hand clinically apparent thyroid nodules are present in 4-7% of the adult population.

Saphenous neuropathy due to large hydatid cyst within long adductor muscle: case report and literature review.

An unusual case of saphenous neuropathy secondary to compression by a large hydatid cyst within the adductor longus muscle is reported. Solitary hydatid cyst(s) localized in the skeletal muscles occur rarely and often mimic soft tissue tumours. Presentation with signs of peripheral nerve compression by a hydatid cyst in an extremity is exceedingly rare.
