Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (dioxins) are classed as persistent organic pollutants and have adverse effects on multiple functions within the body. Dioxins are known carcinogens, immunotoxins, and teratogens. Dioxins are transformed in vivo, and interactions between the products and the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) lead to the formation of proinflammatory and toxic metabolites.

The aim of the study was to evaluate diet of pupils of upper secondary schools and to investigate the relation between participants' place of residence and their diet. The study was carried out in 2001; information were collected from 1378 pupils of second classes (822 girls and 556 boys) from 60 upper secondary schools of Mazowieckie region, chosen at random (12% of all upper secondary schools in the region). Dietary assessment was performed on the basis of 24 hrs recall.

The dietary habits changes of 1067 medical students (577 females and 490 males) examined in 1985/1986, 1989/1990, 1994/1995 and 2000/2001 years are presented. The results indicate an improvement of nutrition in the period of 15 years. Intake of fruit and vegetables, dairy products, pulps and vegetable fats has been increased.

Two-hundred twenty eight students of Warsaw Medical University (98 males and 130 females) completed a questionnaire providing information on health perceptions, somatic complaints, chronic diseases and hospital stay. Over 90% of students reported their health status in good and very good categories. The most common complaints were fatigue and nervous exhaustion.
