Background: Metallothioneins (MTs) are low molecular weight proteins (6-7 kDa), which have been shown to regulate zinc ion homeostasis. MTs exert anti-apoptotic and pro-proliferative effect on cancer cells. Overexpression of MT-I and MT-II isoforms has been noted in many malignant tumors, but the role of their expression in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) remains unclear.

Heterotopic pancreas in the stomach (type II according to Heinrich) - literature review and case report.

Heterotopic pancreas is a rare congenital disorder characterized by the presence of normal pancreatic tissue located outside the pancreas. The most common locations include the duodenum, stomach, and jejunum. Most cases of heterotopic pancreas are asymptomatic.

[A case of bilateral oncocytomas of the submandibular gland and synchronous renal oncocytomas].

A case of 42 years-old man with bilateral big sized (12 x 5 cm and 10 x 4,5 cm) oncocytoma in submandibular glands was presented. Oncocytoma is a rare benign neoplasm observed in numerous of organs. In the case described besides submandibular glands tumours, accessory oncocytic tumours in both kidneys were diagnosed.

[Analysis of PCNA, Ki67, AgNOR and p53 expression in brain glial tumors].

Background And Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical usefulness of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), Ki67 antigen, p53 protein and silver-binding nucleolar organizer regions (AgNOR) in brain glial tumors.

Material And Methods: The investigation of PCNA, Ki67 and p53 was carried out on a group of 120 patients with glial tumors operated on at the Neurosurgical Department of Wroclaw Medical University including 63 patients operated again because of recurrence. AgNOR was evaluated on a group of 64 patients including 38 patients operated again.

[Analysis of expression of estrogen (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR) in brain glial tumors and its correlation with expression of p53 protein and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA)].

Background And Purpose: All the types of the glial cells contain estrogen (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR) but their occurrence in glial tumors of the brain is still controversial. The aim of this research was the clinical analysis of ER and PR expression in correlation with histological malignancy and expression of p53 and PCNA.

Material And Methods: The investigation was carried out on a group of 56 patients operated on at the Neurosurgical Department of Wroclaw Medical University.

A case of a neurilemmoma of the thyroid gland in a 12-year-old girl is reported. The tumor was noted as a asymptomatic left lower neck swelling 9 months before admission. Ultrasound scan showed the solid lesion of predominantly hypoechoic structure measuring 17.

Composite split cord malformation coexisting with spinal cord teratoma--case report and review of the literature.

The coincidence of split cord malformation (SCM) and intraspinal teratoma is an extremely uncommon condition. We report a case of a neurologically asymptomatic 13-year-old girl with a 5-year history of progressive scoliosis. The routinely performed MRI revealed SCM at levels L1-L2, tethering of the spinal cord at levels L4-L5 and the presence of an intraspinal tumour at the level of the observed SCM.

[Non-compliance resulting in fatal asthmatic attack in a 27-year-old woman].

We describe a case of fatal asthmatic attack in 27-year-old woman with type II brittle asthma and pollinosis. Despite recurrent episodes of severe asthmatic attacks she refused prolonged therapy with the exception of beta 2-agonists used when needed. The day prior to the fatal attack she was intensively exposed to pollens.
