Bladder cancer (BC) represents a wide spectrum of diseases, ranging from recurrent non-invasive tumors to advanced stages that require intensive treatments. BC accounts for an estimated 500,000 new cases and 200,000 deaths worldwide every year. Understanding the biology of BC has changed how this disease is diagnosed and treated.

Background And Objective: YouTube is an open online video platform that both patients and health care professionals use to access information. Our aim was to evaluate the quality of videos related to living-donor kidney transplantation (LDKT) on YouTube.

Methods: Research was conducted using the keywords "living donor kidney transplant" and "kidney transplant".

Androgen receptor-targeted agents have significantly improved the prognosis of metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC). Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels are key prognostic markers, with rapid and deep reductions associated with better outcomes. This study aims to assess the association between the new PSA cut-offs and survival in mHSPC patients treated with Apalutamide.

Article Synopsis
  • People who get solid organ transplants often have problems with erectile dysfunction, which can be affected by their other health issues and problems with their organ.
  • This study looked at how safe it is to use penile prostheses in these patients and found that about 11% of them had complications, mostly infections and device failures.
  • Even though there are some risks, doctors can feel more confident about using these prostheses in transplant recipients since the study showed similar reoperation rates compared to non-transplanted patients.

Background: Minimally invasive techniques have demonstrated several advantages over the open approach. In the field of prostate cancer, the LAP-01 trial demonstrated the superiority of robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) over laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) when comparing continence at 3-month after surgery, with no statistically significant differences at 6 and 12 months of follow-up.

Objectives: Externally validate the LAP-01 study and compare functional outcomes between the two minimally invasive approaches.

Background: Current potential living kidney donor's assessment includes functional and anatomical evaluation. Scintigraphy is recommended in some cases and some centers include this test in the donor's protocol. Recent studies advocate for the avoidance of this test as CT or MRI volumetry showed to accurately assess donor's renal function.

Article Synopsis
  • The systematic review focused on assessing the effectiveness and complications of endourological ex vivo stone surgeries in kidney donors with kidney stones, analyzing studies published between 2002 and 2023.
  • Out of 1,726 screened abstracts, 16 studies involving 209 patients were included, revealing a high average stone-free rate of 95.4% and a mean surgery duration of 17.3 minutes.
  • Complications were minimal, with less than 2% experiencing significant intraoperative or postoperative issues, highlighting these surgeries as a safe and effective option for treating nephrolithiasis in donors.

Purpose: Patients with lower urinary tract malformations (LUTM) were suspended from kidney transplantation (KT) programs in the past due to various concerns. Consequently, only a limited number of studies have explored this topic at hand. In this study, our objective was to perform a systematic review (SR) to evaluate the current evidence regarding KT outcomes as well as patient survival (PS), postoperative complications and urinary tract infections (UTI) in individuals with childhood LUTM.

Introduction: Living-donor nephrectomy (LDN) is the most valuable source of organs for kidney transplantation worldwide. The current preoperative evaluation of a potential living donor candidate does not take into account formal estimation of postoperative renal function decline after surgery using validated prediction models. The aim of this study was to summarize the available models to predict the mid- to long-term renal function following LDN, aiming to support both clinicians and patients during the decision-making process.

Background: Metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC) treatment has changed drastically during the last years with the emergence of androgen receptor-targeted agents (ARTAs). ARTA combined with androgen deprivation therapy has demonstrated better oncological and survival outcomes in these patients. However, the optimal choice among different ARTAs remains uncertain due to their analogous efficacy.

The iliac fossa is the most commonly used site to place the graft in renal transplantation in adults. However, iliac fossa may not be used in various conditions. Thus, orthotopic renal transplantation becomes a viable alternative for these selected patients.

Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) has been shown to achieve excellent oncological outcomes with a low rate of complications in patients with prostate cancer. However, data on RARP in renal transplant recipients (RT) are dispersed. A literature search was conducted through April 2023 using PubMed/Medline, Embase and Web of Science databases.

Purpose Chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) is permanent pelvic pain of unknown etiology. Current theories suggest a multifactorial origin for CPPS, including urinary pathologies, psychosocial factors, prostate inflammation, infection, central sensitization of the nervous system, and muscular contractures or fibrosis. As there are no defined treatment protocols for CPPS, a multimodal approach is recommended.

Introduction: This study aimed to assess the prevalence and severity of complications after simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation (SPKT) and to evaluate its influence on both grafts' long-term results.

Methods: This was an observational, retrospective study including 39 consecutive SPKT cases from 2000-2018. Complications were classified into kidney-related and pancreas-related.

NK and CD8 T cells are the main cytolytic effectors involved in innate and adaptive tumor immune surveillance, respectively. Although their educational pathways differ, similarities in their development and function suggest that CD8 T lymphocytes could be sensitive to NK cell licensing signals, which might influence their antitumor response. To demonstrate this hypothesis, we retrospectively evaluated the impact that NK cell licensing interactions have on the expression of CD226 on CD8 T lymphocytes and on the survival of patients with different hematopoietic and solid cancers (n = 1,023).

Due to their immunosuppressed status, solid organ transplant recipients are a special group of patients with an incidence of bladder cancer greater than the rest of the population, especially in the first 6 years after transplantation. Also, treatment with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin, a reference therapy in nonmuscle invasive high-risk bladder cancer, may be less effective in this group of patients and could cause more adverse effects. However, the data published so far and the experience initiated in the Virgen de la Arrixaca Clinical University Hospital do not support these hypotheses.
