This brief technical report describes our initial experience using the FlowGuard valved introducer sheath during the insertion of tunneled hemodialysis catheters in 15 patients. The incorporation of a silicone valve into the introducer sheath is intended to minimize blood loss and decrease the risk of air embolism during the catheter insertion procedure. Our preliminary experience demonstrated that the FlowGuard sheath is a substantial improvement when compared to standard introducer sheaths.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how oligodendrocytes (a type of brain cell) die after spinal cord injuries using different types of mice models.
  • Significant oligodendrocyte death was observed in the area around the injury, primarily due to apoptosis (programmed cell death), especially in wild-type mice compared to Wlds mice, which had some axon viability at 8 days post-injury.
  • Oligodendrocyte death was prevented in mice lacking the pro-apoptotic protein Bax, suggesting that loss of axonal support after spinal cord injury may trigger apoptotic processes through Bax expression.
