Lack of widespread inflammation after contemporary PCI.

Background: The inflammatory response to percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) contributes to restenosis. However, it is not known if advances in PCI have attenuated this response. This study sought to determine the prevalence of systemic inflammation immediately after contemporary PCI, and to identify the predictors of the acute proinflammatory response to PCI.

Inflammation and coronary artery disease.

Inflammation is now recognized as being pivotal in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. This review highlights key concepts in our current understanding of the role of inflammation in the initiation, progression, and complication of atherosclerosis. The role of various triggers and amplifiers and the innate and adaptive immunity in the cascade of inflammatory events are also presented.
