Article Synopsis
  • In this study, researchers analyzed the outcomes of trauma patients who underwent emergency abdominal surgery (EAS) and looked into how inter-hospital transfers impacted their results, especially focusing on in-hospital mortality.
  • The study involved 973 patients, with 258 transferred to a tertiary care hospital and stratified into groups based on surgical stress levels and specific conditions, noting important distinctions in outcomes based on transfer status.
  • Findings revealed that inter-hospital transfer significantly increased mortality risk specifically for patients with potential bowel ischemia; however, it reduced the length of stay and severe complications for those with hollow viscus perforation, suggesting that transfers should be minimized for high-risk patients.

Diarrhea after bariatric procedures, mainly those with malabsorptive elements including Roux-Y Gastric Bypass and Biliopancreatic Diversion, is common and an essential determinant of quality of life and micro- and macronutrient deficiencies. Bariatric surgery is the only sustainably successful method to address morbid obesity and its comorbidities, particularly gaining more and more importance in the specific treatment of diabetic patients. Approximately half a million procedures are annually performed around the world, with numbers expected to rise drastically in the near future.
