Importance: Network hyperexcitability may contribute to cognitive dysfunction in patients with Alzheimer disease (AD).

Objective: To determine the ability of the antiseizure drug levetiracetam to improve cognition in persons with AD.

Design, Setting, And Participants: The Levetiracetam for Alzheimer's Disease-Associated Network Hyperexcitability (LEV-AD) study was a phase 2a randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled crossover clinical trial of 34 adults with AD that was conducted at the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, between October 16, 2014, and July 21, 2020.

(Rosaceae) comprises more than 500 species with additional commercially cultivated raspberries and blackberries. The most recent (> 100 years old) global taxonomic treatment of the genus defined 12 subgenera; two subgenera were subsequently described and some species were rearranged. Intra- and interspecific ploidy levels and hybridization make phylogenetic estimation of challenging.

Background: Recent studies reveal an association between slow-wave sleep (SWS), amyloid-β aggregation, and cognition.

Objective: This retrospective study examines whether long-term use of trazodone, an SWS enhancer, is associated with delayed cognitive decline.

Methods: We identified 25 regular trazodone users (mean age 75.

Primary progressive aphasia is a syndrome characterized by progressive loss of language abilities with three main phenotypic clinical presentations, including logopenic, non-fluent/agrammatic, and semantic variants. Previous imaging studies have shown unique anatomic impacts within language networks in each variant. However, direct measures of spontaneous neuronal activity and functional integrity of these impacted neural networks in primary progressive aphasia are lacking.

Background: Patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) are more prone to seizures and myoclonus, but relative risk of these symptoms among other dementia types is unknown.

Objective: To determine incidence of seizures and myoclonus in the three most common neurodegenerative dementias: AD, dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and frontotemporal dementia (FTD).

Methods: Our institution's medical records were reviewed for new-onset unprovoked seizures and myoclonus in patients meeting criteria for AD (n = 1,320), DLB (n = 178), and FTD (n = 348).

Plastid matK gene sequences for 374 genera representing all angiosperm orders and 12 genera of gymnosperms were analyzed using parsimony (MP) and Bayesian inference (BI) approaches. Traditionally, slowly evolving genomic regions have been preferred for deep-level phylogenetic inference in angiosperms. The matK gene evolves approximately three times faster than the widely used plastid genes rbcL and atpB.

We sampled the 5' end of the granule-bound starch synthase gene (GBSSI or waxy) in Rosaceae, sequencing 108 clones from 18 species in 14 genera representing all four subfamilies (Amygdaloideae, Maloideae, Rosoideae, and Spiraeoideae), as well as four clones from Rhamnus catharticus (Rhamnaceae). This is the first phylogenetic study to use the 5' portion of this nuclear gene. Parsimony and maximum-likelihood analyses of 941 bases from seven complete and two partial exons demonstrate the presence of two loci (GBSSI-1 and GBSSI-2) in the Rosaceae.

Insertion/deletion events (indels) and nucleotide substitutions at the extreme 3' end of the chloroplast gene matK have been identified that distinguish certain major lineages of grasses. A 1-bp (base pair) deletion creating a shift in the open reading frame (ORF) and a point mutation support the positions of Streptochaeta and Anomochloa as the two most basal lineages in Poaceae. Another 1-bp deletion resulting in early termination of the ORF is unique to Ehrharta, a member of the taxonomically disputable tribe Ehrharteae.

We used nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer region (ITS 1 - 5.8S - ITS 2; ITS) sequences to generate the first phylogeny of Rubus based on a large, molecular data set. We sampled 57 taxa including 20 species of subgenus Rubus (blackberries), one to seven species from each of the remaining 11 subgenera, and the monotypic and closely related Dalibarda.

Individual plants of several Amelanchier taxa contain many polymorphic nucleotide sites in the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA). This polymorphism is unusual because it is not recent in origin and thus has resisted homogenization by concerted evolution. Amelanchier ITS sequence polymorphism is hypothesized to be the result of gene flow between two major North American clades resolved by phylogenetic analysis of ITS sequences.
