Article Synopsis
  • Inadequate lung fluid clearance is crucial in the development of transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN), and the study aims to see if left ventricular diastolic dysfunction affects this process.
  • The study involved 27 neonates with TTN compared to 27 controls, using echocardiography and lung ultrasounds to assess heart and lung function over different time periods after birth.
  • Results showed that neonates with TTN had significantly lower left atrial strain reservoir (LASr) measurements, indicating diastolic dysfunction, which may hinder lung fluid clearance, suggesting that monitoring LASr could help predict the need for respiratory support.

Echocardiographic assessment of left ventricular function is crucial in NICU. The study aimed to compare the accuracy and agreement of global longitudinal strain (GLS) with conventional measurements. Real-life echocardiograms of neonates receiving intensive care were retrospectively reviewed.

Objectives: To assess the feasibility, accuracy, and reproducibility of tissue-tracking mitral annular displacement (TMAD) compared with other measures of left ventricular systolic function in healthy preterm and term neonates in the transitional period.

Methods: This was a prospective observational study. Two echocardiograms were performed at 24 and 48 hours of life.

Lung ultrasound (LU) has emerged as the imaging technique of choice for the assessment of neonates with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) at the bedside. Scoring systems were developed to quantify RDS severity and to predict the need for surfactant administration. There is no data on the comparison of the three main LU scores (LUS) proposed by Brat, Raimondi and Rodriguez-Fanjul.

Ultrasound Superior Vena Cava (SVC) flow assessment is a common measure of systemic and cerebral perfusion, although accuracy is limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether any improvements in accuracy could be achieved by measuring stroke distance from the instantaneous mean velocity, rather than from peak velocity, and by directly tracing area from images obtained with a high frequency linear probe. Paired phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging (PCMRI) and ultrasound assessments of SVC flow were performed in a pilot cohort of 7 infants.

Honey is a natural product that has been used as medication since the ancient times for its nutritive and therapeutic value. Despite these properties, honey use has been limited in evidence-based medicine due to the lack of evidence in clinical settings, particularly in paediatric population. An increasing interest has grown towards honey during the last years.
