Article Synopsis
  • - C1q deficiency is a rare immune disorder that increases the risk of infections and autoimmune diseases similar to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), often leading to various health complications.
  • - An international study involving 18 patients evaluated the outcomes of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for C1q deficiency, showing a 71% overall survival rate and improvement in autoimmune symptoms for most patients.
  • - The study highlights that patients with severe autoimmune symptoms have poorer survival rates, and specific antibodies were linked to different organ involvements, emphasizing the need for careful patient selection and risk assessment for HSCT as a treatment option.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzes the role of polyamines in oral health, particularly among older adults, and their dysregulation linked to inflammatory and cancer conditions.
  • Researchers reviewed literature from 2000 to May 2024, identifying 19 relevant studies out of 2725 publications focused on older adults (65+).
  • Findings indicate increased polyamine levels, like spermidine and putrescine, in those with oral carcinoma, periodontal infections, and halitosis, suggesting these compounds could serve as non-invasive biomarkers for these conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • There are many immigrant communities in the U.S. that have high rates of hepatitis B and liver cancer.
  • A project was done to find out what these communities know about these diseases, so that better educational programs can be created.
  • The study showed that people in these communities have a lot of gaps in their knowledge about hepatitis B and liver cancer, and these gaps make it harder for them to get check-ups and vaccinations.

Objective: To assess the clinical evidence for silver diamine fluoride (SDF) to reduce dentine hypersensitivity in adults.

Methods: Two independent researchers searched the English literature in five databases (Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library) up to 15th July 2023 for clinical trials investigating the desensitising effect of professionally applied SDF to manage dentine hypersensitivity in adults aged 18 or above at any follow-up period. The primary outcome was the change in dentine hypersensitivity between baseline and follow-up visits after SDF application regarding any validated pain outcome measures.

Introduction: Tooth wear is a prevalent dental condition among older adults, leading to pain and adversely affecting aesthetics, functionality, and their overall quality of life. This review aims to update the information on tooth wear in older adults from the past five years and to provide guidance on the clinical management of tooth wear in older adults.

Methods: A literature search was conducted in three electronic databases, Scopus, Pubmed, and Embase, for English publications from January 2019 to December 2023 on clinical studies with participants aged 65 or above on tooth wear.

Background: Non-institutionalised older adults is the majority of older adults in Hong Kong. The study aimed to examine erosive tooth wear (ETW) and its association with dental conditions and oral hygiene habits among non-institutionalised older adults in Hong Kong.

Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited dentate adults aged 60 or above from nine elderly daycare centres in the five main districts of Hong Kong.

Introduction: The aim of this systematic review is to provide a clinical update of the current knowledge on COVID-19 and oral mucosal lesions, to analyze the types and prevalence of oral mucosal lesions in patients with COVID-19, and to clarify the potential association between COVID-19 and oral mucosal lesions.

Methods: The literature search was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and the Cochrane Library, as well as literatures via manual searches of the reference lists of included studies. Studies published in English that mentioned oral mucosal lesions in patients with COVID-19 were included, resulting in a total of 31 studies.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which contribute significantly to global morbidity, are largely preventable through behavioral changes. As with other NCDs, periodontitis is associated with modifiable risk factors such as smoking and stress and is linked to multiple adverse health outcomes through a shared pathway of chronic systemic inflammation. While the health benefits of physical activity have been widely promoted in public health and extensively studied for other systemic conditions, its impact on periodontal health has only recently started to gain attention.

Article Synopsis
  • Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) with dysregulated JAK/STAT signaling can lead to immune dysfunction and infections, and while hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a potential cure, initial outcomes were not promising.
  • This study evaluated the effectiveness of off-label JAK inhibitors (JAKi) as a treatment option for patients with hyperactive JAK/STAT signaling disorders at various European medical centers.
  • Results showed that 87% of patients with STAT1 gain of function and 90% with STAT3 gain of function saw symptom improvement, with mild adverse events reported; a significant portion of patients continued JAKi treatment successfully, and some proceeded to HSCT, achieving a 91%

Integration of smoking cessation program into routine oral health care has been advocated by World Health Organization since it brings extensive benefits to oral health. By tobacco cessation, patients are less prone to progression of periodontal disease, have less future tooth loss, have reduced risks of oral mucosal lesions and head and neck cancers. Evidence indicates that dentists are in a favorable position to deliver effective smoking cessation advice to improve patients' oral health.

Transition of care refers to the continuity of health care during the movement from one healthcare setting to another as care needs change during a chronic illness. We sought to describe social, demographic, and clinical factors related to successful transition in a tertiary urban care facility in patients with CHD. Patients were identified utilising the electronic medical record.

Purpose: This study examines the effects of an auditory training program on the auditory and cognitive abilities of older adults. Auditory rehabilitation programs are generally designed for hearing aid users, and studies have demonstrated benefits for them. In this study, we seek to understand whether such a training program can also benefit older adults who do not wear hearing aids.

High-fidelity patient simulation (HFPS) is widely used in professional training to enhance students' competence in clinical management. A guideline for HFPS provides a systematic approach to direct students to learning during the simulation process. Problem-solving (PS) and clinical reasoning (CR) skills are essential to developing students' professional competence in safe and effective care.

Patients with single ventricle cardiac disease palliated with Fontan procedures inevitably develop Fontan-Associated Liver Disease (FALD), which poses a significant risk for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Standard imaging criteria for the diagnosis of cirrhosis are not reliable due to parenchymal heterogeneity of FALD. We present 6 cases to demonstrate our center's experience and the challenges in diagnosing HCC within this patient population.
