Background: A valid and practical measure of comorbid illness burden in dialysis populations is greatly needed to enable unbiased comparisons of clinical outcomes. We compare the discriminatory accuracy of 1 year mortality predictions derived from four comorbidity instruments in a large representative US dialysis population.

Methods: Comorbidity information was collected using the Index of Coexistent Diseases (ICED) in 1779 haemodialysis patients of a national dialysis provider between 1997 and 2000.

Background: Few studies have performed a comprehensive comparison of the prognostic importance of comorbidity to that of other case-mix factors influencing incident dialysis patients' survival. A detailed characterization of the case-mix differences between peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD) patients at the onset of dialysis therapy has not been performed, despite the importance of accounting for baseline differences in future comparisons of outcomes across modality groups. We compared baseline characteristics of 279 PD and 759 HD patients enrolled in the Choices for Healthy Outcomes in Caring for End-Stage Renal Disease (CHOICE) Cohort Study, a prospective study of incident dialysis patients.

Since 1995, the Medical Evidence Report for end-stage renal disease (Form 2728) has been used nationally to collect information on comorbid conditions. To date, these data have not been validated. A national cross-sectional study of 1005 incident dialysis patients (734 hemodialysis and 271 peritoneal dialysis) enrolled between October 1995 and June 1998 was conducted using clinical data to validate 17 comorbid conditions on Form 2728.
