Background: Severe obesity is common and has serious health implications. Yet, few eligible patients pursue bariatric surgery.
Background: Several options exist for surgical conversion after sleeve gastrectomy (SG), but a definitive safety profile for each option by indication for conversion remains unclear.
Objectives: To determine and compare 30-day risk profiles of SG conversion to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS), and single-anastomosis duodenoileostomy (SADI).
Methods: Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program national database entries from 2020 to 2022 were used to identify 25,760 adult patients who underwent SG conversion to RYGB, BPD-DS, or SADI.
Bariatric surgical procedures such as sleeve gastrectomy (SG) provide effective type 2 diabetes (T2D) remission in human patients. Previous work demonstrated that gastrointestinal levels of the bacterial metabolite lithocholic acid (LCA) are decreased after SG in mice and humans. Methods: Appointment data from three time-points: pre-pandemic (1/1/19-3/15/20, n = 19,290), pandemic (3/16/20-10/31/21, n = 29,459) and current-state (11/1/21-12/31/2022, n = 24,270) was retrieved in our multi-hospital ambulatory MBS program.
Lentil protein hydrolysates (LPH) and lentil protein hydrolysates cross-linked (LPHC) were grafted with gum Arabic (GA) through a wet Maillard reaction at 100°C for 2 h and called MLPH and MLPHC. The samples were assessed for absorption, degree of grafting (DG), surface hydrophobicity, antioxidant activity, molecular weight (MW) profile, chemical alteration, volatile compounds, functional and sensory properties. Results showed that Maillard grafting led to increase in absorption and DG (maximum value: MLPHC), and led to the reduction of the surface hydrophobicity and antioxidant activity (minimum value: MLPHC).

Study Design: We analyzed the MBSAQIP database from 2016 to 2021 to characterize trends in SDD for minimally invasive bariatric operation.
Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of preoperative weight loss on surgical outcomes and operating room (OR) times after primary bariatric procedures, including laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB).
Study Design: A retrospective cohort study uses the 2021 MBSAQIP dataset. Preoperative total weight loss (TWL)% was calculated.
Background: While some studies have reported improvement in gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms after sleeve gastrectomy (SG), others have reported higher incidence of de-novo GERD, worsening of prior GERD symptoms and erosive esophagitis post SG. Furthermore, GERD unresponsive to medical management is one of the most common indications for conversion of SG to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). Real-world data on safety of primary SG, primary RYGB and SG to RYGB conversion for obese patients with GERD would be helpful for informing surgeons and patient procedure selection.

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, deferral of inpatient elective surgical procedures served as a primary mechanism to increase surge inpatient capacity. Given the benefit of bariatric surgery on treating obesity and associated comorbidities, decreased access to bariatric surgery may have long-term public health consequences. Understanding the extent of the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic to bariatric surgery will help health systems plan for appropriate access.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Recent data describing gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms experienced by patients after bariatric surgery is lacking, and previous studies in sleeve gastrectomy patients have been limited in scope of follow-up time or extent of GI symptoms examined. We sought to characterize the prevalence and time course of patient-reported eating-related symptoms in sleeve gastrectomy patients.
Methods: From July 2020 to July 2021, sleeve gastrectomy patients seen at three Boston area hospitals received electronic surveys and prospectively reported GI symptoms using the BODY-Q eating-related symptoms scale.
Background: Surgical patients with limited digital literacy may experience reduced telemedicine access. We investigated racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in telemedicine compared with in-person surgical consultation during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
Study Design: Retrospective analysis of new visits within the Division of General & Gastrointestinal Surgery at an academic medical center occurring between March 24 through June 23, 2020 (Phase I, Massachusetts Public Health Emergency) and June 24 through December 31, 2020 (Phase II, relaxation of restrictions on healthcare operations) was performed.
