Several types of accidents, such as exposure to toxic gases, fires, or explosions, are encountered in process industries which are highly risk systems. To reduce risks and the consequences of disruptive events, resilience is recognized as one of the most important aspects of safety management, and resilience assessment in complex process systems plays an important role. This study examines methods for resilience assessment in process industries, by reviewing the published studies.

Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause erythema, sunburn, inflammation, and even skin cancer. Sunscreen is highly effective in protecting against UV radiation. Hydrogels, due to their similarity to the skin's extracellular matrix, flexibility, and high water content, have been widely used for sunscreen applications.

Sperm navigation through the complex microarchitecture of the fallopian tube is essential for successful fertilization. Spatiotemporal structural alteration due to folded epithelium or muscle contractions in the fallopian tube changes the geometry of the sperm pathways. The role of structural complexity in sperm navigational patterns has been investigated for single sperm cells but has not been fully addressed at the population level.

This paper introduces a novel method for spleen segmentation in ultrasound images, using a two-phase training approach. In the first phase, the SegFormerB0 network is trained to provide an initial segmentation. In the second phase, the network is further refined using the Pix2Pix structure, which enhances attention to details and corrects any erroneous or additional segments in the output.

Background: The design of smart, photoactivated nanomaterials for targeted drug delivery systems (DDS) has garnered significant research interest due in part to the ability of light to precisely control drug release in specific cells or tissues with high spatial and temporal resolution. The development of effective light-triggered DDS involves mechanisms including photocleavage, photoisomerization, photopolymerization, photosensitization, photothermal phenomena, and photorearrangement, which permit response to ultraviolet (UV), visible (Vis), and/or Near Infrared (NIR) light. This review explores recent advancements in light-responsive small molecules, polymers, and nanocarriers, detailing their underlying mechanisms and utility for drug delivery and/or imaging.

Avoiding error in handling artifacts is crucial for achieving a high level of system reliability and safety assessment. This study develops a predictive and ranking model of use error (PRUE). In the first phase, use errors are systematically detected and anticipated via an inquiry process in two levels (activity and function).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the causes of mandibular fractures in Afghanistan, finding that road accidents, falls, and interpersonal conflicts are the primary causes among the population.!
  • A total of 579 fractures from 535 patients were analyzed, with most injuries occurring in individuals aged 21-30 and single, parasymphyseal fractures being the most frequent type.!
  • The research emphasizes the need for public health initiatives, like enhancing road safety and enforcing traffic laws, to reduce fracture incidence and improve healthcare management for these injuries.

Objective: Influenza complications are mild to serious, and can cause death in some cases. A great deal of attention has been paid in recent years to the development and use of new antiviral compounds to overcome drug resistance in certain strains of the influenza virus and treat the clinical implications. This study aimed to investigate the antiviral effect of punicalagin and its associated mechanism against influenza A (H1N1) virus .

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disease caused by the inheritance of two mutant cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) alleles, one from each parent. Autosomal recessive disorders are rarely associated with germline mutations or mosaicism. Here, we propose a case of paternal germline mutation causing CF.

This paper proposes a forward layer-wise learning algorithm for CNNs in classification problems. The algorithm utilizes the Separation Index (SI) as a supervised complexity measure to evaluate and train each layer in a forward manner. The proposed method explains that gradually increasing the SI through layers reduces the input data's uncertainties and disturbances, achieving a better feature space representation.

Microalgae have been remarkably taken into account due to their wide applications in the biopharmaceutical, nutraceutical and bio-energy fields. However, contamination of microalgae with bacteria still appears to be a concern, adversely impacting products' quality and process efficiency. Microalgae decontamination with conventional techniques is usually expensive and time-consuming.

The discovery of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) has envisioned an excellent outlook for cancer diagnosis and prognosis. Among numerous efforts proposed for CTCs isolation, vortex separation is a well-known method for capturing CTCs from blood due to its applicability, low sample volume requirement, and ability to retain cell viability. It is a label-free, passive, low-cost, and automated method, making it an ideal solution for lab-on-a-chip applications.

  • * Researchers studied CFTR mutations across 87 Iranian families using advanced genetic techniques and found mutations in 95.8% of cases, with the most common ones being F508del and others.
  • * The study also suggests that Turkey may have played a role in introducing these mutations into Iran, which could help improve genetic testing and prenatal diagnosis for CF in the country.

Macroscopic taste processing connectivity was investigated using functional magnetic resonance imaging during the presentation of sour, salty, and sweet tastants in anesthetized macaque monkeys. This examination of taste processing affords the opportunity to study the interactions between sensory regions, central integrators, and effector areas. Here, 58 brain regions associated with gustatory processing in primates were aggregated, collectively forming the .

Here, we report the fabrication of an antioxidant photosensitizing hydrogel system based on chitosan (CS-Cy/PBI-DOPA) covalently cross-linked with perylene bisimide dopamine (PBI-DOPA) as a photosensitizer. The severe insolubility and low tumor selectivity limitations of perylene were overcome by conjugation with dopamine and then to the chitosan hydrogel. The mechanical and rheological study of CS-Cy/PBI-DOPA photodynamic antioxidant hydrogels illustrated interconnected microporous morphologies with high elasticity, swelling ability, and suitable shear-thinning behavior.
