The effect of using two stabilization temperatures and fixation process on preparation of carbon nanofibers.

Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) are prepared from electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) because of their high carbon content. Heat treatment (oxidative stabilization and carbonization) is necessary to convert PAN nanofibers into CNFs. The fixation of fibrous structure of polymer precursor during heat treatment is always considered as a problem.

Improvement in variance estimation using transformed auxiliary variable under simple random sampling.

This paper offers a novel approach to formulate efficient ratio estimator of the population variance using a transformed auxiliary variable. The impact of transformation on auxiliary information has also been discussed. It is observed that incorporating a transformed auxiliary variable result in a high gain in efficiency.

A 68-Year-Old Man with Multiple Comorbidities Presents with a Weeping Wound of the Left Lower Extremity: A Case Report.

In cases of cellulitis, identification of a specific pathogen is often not possible on clinical grounds, and in our institution the recommended practice for empiric treatment of skin infections is to cover for the usual pathogens, such as and . This article describes the management of a 68-year-old man in whom the choice of appropriate antibiotic treatment for suspected cellulitis was complicated by many factors, including several known risk factors for recurrent cellulitis, multiple comorbid conditions, and the patient's wish to leave hospital as soon as possible. Given this patient's clinical syndrome, coverage for methicillin-resistant was part of the treatment decision, and to enable a prompt discharge, an effective oral treatment was needed for him to take at home.

Characterizing optimum electrospinning conditions for graft urethanized Poly(Vinyl Alcohol)(U-PVA).

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a water-soluble polymer that has been widely used in medical and pharmaceutical applications. For this study, we grafted urea to PVA to enhance its wettability and solubility in water. We used a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to characterize the electrospun graft urethanized poly(vinyl alcohol) U-PVA and determine the best electrospinning conditions.

Serum Caveolin-1 Level is Inversely Associated with Serum Vaspin, Visfatin, and HbA1c in Newly Diagnosed Men with Type-2 Diabetes.

Background: The fluctuation in serum caveolin-1 (Cav-1) concentrations is an important indicator of many diseases. Irrespective of the actual cause, a significant reduction of serum Cav-1 is associated with a significant increase in insulin secretion and hyperinsulinemia. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the relationship between serum Cav-1, serum vaspin and visfatin in newly diagnosed men with T2DM.

Effect of Kisspeptin-54 on Testicular Degeneration Induced by Cadmium Chloride.

Adult males are considered the main causes of infertility defects in the world; therefore, scientists are searching for factors that play a role in male fertility, such as kisspeptin, which acts as one of the master controllers and regulators of gonadotropin secretion from the hypothalamus in mammalian species. Furthermore, it has been shown that the kisspeptin receptor is mainly localized in the interstitial and germ cells of the testicles and has a role in the regulation of gonadal development and function. This study aimed to investigate the effect of kisspeptin on testicular degeneration syndrome induced by cadmium chloride in male Wistar rats and identify the best concentration of kisspeptin to cure this syndrome.

Relationship Between IL-2, IL-17 Concentrations, and Serum Creatinine Levels in Men with Chronic Kidney Diseases.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD), is a major public health challenge worldwide. It is more prevalent in developed countries compared with the rest of the world, due to the higher rates of life expectancy and unhealthy lifestyle related factors. This aim of the current study is to evaluate the relationship between interleukins IL-2 and IL-17 concentrations and kidney function markers in men with CKD.

Antioxidants Supplementation in Acute Amitriptyline Abuse for Pain.

The fundamental aim of this study is to establish the role of antioxidant supplementation in alleviating acute amitriptyline induced oxidative stress. The effect of supplementation was compared on treatment of acute amitriptyline intoxication cases for pain management, with alpha lipoic acid (ALA) alone or with vitamin C, with that of healthy individuals (group I), and those receiving only routine standard treatment (RST) as control (group II). A total of 132 human subjects divided into 5 groups were supplemented with either placebo, RST, RST with vitamin C, RST with ALA, or RST with vitamin C, and ALA.

Nonpenetrating trauma resulting in hemopericardium presenting as syncope.

Hemopericardium is a life-threatening condition that needs to be treated promptly to prevent serious complications. It typically results from penetrating trauma directly into the pericardial sac resulting in cardiac tamponade and death if not promptly treated. High clinical suspicion should prompt further workup even in the absence of significant injury.

Myeloid sarcoma as a manifestation of acute myeloid leukemia.

We report a case of a 43-year-old man who presented with dyspnea because of large bilateral pleural effusions and imaging findings of a large periaortic mass with compression of the esophagus and left atrium. Subsequent soft tissue biopsy was consistent with myeloid sarcoma, and bone marrow biopsy was consistent with acute myeloid leukemia. He was started on induction and subsequent consolidation chemotherapy with complete remission and shrinkage of the tumor.

Cranial nerve involvement in varicella zoster virus after renal transplantation.

This case describes a 60-year-old immunosuppressed man after renal transplant who presented to the emergency department with 1 week of generalized weakness, a 20-lb unintentional weight loss, sore throat, dysarthria, dysphagia, cough, and shortness of breath. Additionally, he developed tinnitus, headaches, photophobia, and neck stiffness. He underwent an extensive workup including a lumbar puncture with meningitis and encephalitis panel, which was positive for varicella zoster virus.

We present a case of a 22-year-old man with a 3-week history of an enlarged inguinal lymph node who presented with status epilepticus.

However, it is also secreted in varying amounts in non-pregnant conditions commonly heralding a neoplastic process. We present a case of 50-year-old man, who presented with bilateral gynaecomastia with elevated testosterone, oestradiol, suppressed gonadotropins with progressively increasing levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).

An assessment of hydrocarbon species in the methanol-to-hydrocarbon reaction over a ZSM-5 catalyst.

A ZSM-5 catalyst is examined in relation to the methanol-to-hydrocarbon (MTH) reaction as a function of reaction temperature and time-on-stream. The reaction profile is characterised using in-line mass spectrometry. Furthermore, the material contained within a catch-pot downstream from the reactor is analysed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Structural and electronic properties of new fullerene derivatives and their possible application as HIV-1 protease inhibitors.

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been carried out at the hybrid Becke 3-Lee-Yang-Parr; B3LYP/3-21G** level of theory to study two series of hydroxy-chalca-acetic acid-(4-pyrrolidin-1-yl-phenyl) ester [C(60)-C(2)H(4)N-(4-XCOCH(2)OH)C(6)H(4)] and hydroxy-chalcoacetic acid-[2-(2-hydroxy-acetylchalcanyl)-4-pyrrolidin-1-yl-phenyl] ester[C(60)-C(2)H(4)N-(3,4-XCOCH(2)OH)C(6)H(4)]. The X atom is O, S or Se for the two series. The vibrational spectra, physical, chemical, thermodynamics and Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship (QSAR) properties of the studied molecules are calculated and discussed.

Molecular spectroscopic study of river nile sediment in the greater cairo region.

The greater Cairo region is the most populated area in Egypt. The aquatic environment of the Nile River in this area is being affected by industrial activities. The study of the molecular structure of sediment may provide a good trace for such changes.
