Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the effect of phenytoin on tissue healing in gastric sleeve surgery, focusing on preventing staple line leakage, a serious complication.
  • - Researchers analyzed how phenytoin impacts bursting pressure at the staple line and examined gene expressions related to healing in rats, revealing significant improvements in collagen and epithelialization scores in the treated group.
  • - The findings suggest that phenytoin enhances the healing process after gastric sleeve surgery and could potentially serve as a new preventive treatment for gastric leaks in humans.

In recent times, access to clean water has become increasingly difficult and one of the most important problems for the sustainability of life due to environmental pollution. Based on this thought, in this study, a multifunctional hydrogel nanocomposite (nanoclay@TiO@PNVP) containing linear poly(-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PNVP), nanoclay, and TiO nanoparticles was synthesized and used as an adsorbent and photocatalyst for the adsorption-based and photocatalytic degradation-based removal of organic and pharmaceutical pollutants such as methylene blue (MB) and sildenafil citrate (SLD). The modification of the hydrogel with TiO nanoparticles and nanoclay aimed to increase the adsorption capacity of the PNVP hydrogel as well as to gain photocatalytic properties for the effective removal of organic contaminants.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how phenytoin, a medication, affects the healing of colorectal anastomoses in rats, focusing on different application methods: intraperitoneal, oral, and rectal.
  • It measures the impact of phenytoin on gene expressions related to healing and compares bursting pressure and tissue examination results between treated and control rats.
  • Findings reveal that phenytoin application significantly increases anastomotic bursting pressure and enhances expression of genes involved in healing, particularly FGF2 and TGF-β, indicating potential benefits for improving recovery following colonic surgery.

Autoantibodies are frequently detected in the presence of autoimmune liver diseases (ALD) [autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC)] and are widely used to classify the disease clinically. The aim of this study was to investigate the contribution of autoantibodies for the diagnosis of ALD and the identification of other accompanying systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARD). In addition, it was aimed to compare the results of indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) antinuclear antibody (ANA) patterns and extractable nuclear antigen (ENA) antibodies.

Autoantibodies targeting nuclear and cytoplasmic autoantigens are used as markers in the diagnosis and classification of systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARD). The dense fine speckled (DFS) pattern is characterized by the fine-granular fluorescence of the nuclei in the interphase and the metaphase chromatin. DFS70 antibodies have been reported in healthy individuals, various autoimmune disorders, infection, cancer and inflammatory conditions.

Background: The possible impact of malnutrition on the efficacy and tolerability of modern chemotherapy for metastatic gastic adenocarcinoma (mGC) patients is unclear. With this study, we aimed to represent the possible impact of malnutrition on the efficacy and tolerability of chemotherapy, and also on the overall survival of mGC patients.

Methods: In this prospective multicenter study, we collected demographic, oncological and nutritional data of our mGC patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the occurrence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in patients with multinodular goitre after total thyroidectomy and how thyroid hormone replacement affects this condition.
  • Fifty-nine patients were followed over 24 months, with measurements taken for weight, waist circumference, and blood samples to assess their health before and after surgery.
  • Results showed a significant increase in MetS rates and worsening lipid profiles, particularly in patients with a higher preoperative body mass index, highlighting the need for monitoring these patients post-surgery.

Objective: D2 lymphadenectomy (D2-LND) with curative resection (R0) is the cornerstone of gastric cancer treatment. In this study, we compared survival outcomes of D2-LDN with D1-LDN in patients who had undergone curative resection for Stages II and III primary gastric adenocarcinoma.

Material And Methods: Between April 1996 and March 2014, 153 consecutive patients with adenocarcinoma of the stomach underwent total gastrectomy with D1-LND or D2-LND.

Herniation of the urinary bladder into the inguinal canal is rare. It constitutes 1-3% of all inguinal hernias. Bladder herniation is usually asymptomatic, and it is usually diagnosed during surgery or as a result of intra-operative bladder injury.

Objective: Standard surgery alone was not able to decrease local recurrence (LR) rate below 20% in rectal cancer treatment. Thus, many centers administered neoadjuvant radiotherapy (preopRTx) with or without concomitant chemotherapy for the prevention of LR. In this study, the results of 164 consecutive patients with mid- and distal rectal cancer who received surgery and adjuvant chemoradiotherapy (Group A) or neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (Group NA) followed by surgery are presented.

Although it is mostly observed in childhood, swallowing foreign bodies causes morbidity and mortality of a high percentage in the adult age group. Swallowed foreign bodies can be both harmless as well as life-threatening. The number, shape, size, and time of the swallowed foreign body to get deposited in the specific location determines the type of treatment.

Intestinal pathologies due to ovarian cyst are observed rarely. Although a limited number of cases in neonatal and adolescent periods have been observed, no adult case has been reported in the literature. Two mechanisms are involved in intestinal complications due to ovarian cysts: torsion due to adhesion or compression of giant ovarian mass with a diameter of 9-10 cm.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed 633 breast cancer patients, comparing the clinical features and metastatic behaviors of three types: invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC), and mixed ductal/lobular carcinoma (MDLC).
  • - Results indicated that MDLC is generally diagnosed at a more advanced stage and has unique tumor characteristics, but the overall survival rates for MDLC did not significantly differ from those for IDC and ILC.
  • - Key differences were found in tumor size, staging at diagnosis, HER2 expression, and the presence of bone metastases among the different cancer types, indicating varied prognostic factors.

A novel coprecipitation method with ytterbium(III) hydroxide has been established for speciation of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in geological and water samples. At pH 10, while Cr(III) was quantitatively recovered, Cr(VI) was recovered under 10% levels. Total chromium was determined reducing of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in acidic media with KI reagent.

Trace element levels in different types of cat and dog foods consumed in Turkey were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry after wet digestion method. Data, expressed on a dry weight basis, were analyzed according to food type (cat or dog, and dry or wet), predominant flavour (beef, fish, chicken), and manufacturer country. Good accuracy was ensured by the analysis of standard reference material (NIST-SRM 8418 Wheat Gluten).
