Urinary Neurotrophin Levels as Potential Biomarkers for Overactive Bladder: A Prospective Study.

Background: Overactive bladder (OAB) is an issue in the field of urology that is known for causing symptoms like urges to urinate frequently during the day and even at night (known as nocturia). Nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) play a vital role in the growth and operation of nerve cells in the body. New studies are indicating a connection between these neurotrophins and OAB; As such this research project was undertaken to explore how levels of NGT and BDNF in urine might be related to the presence of OAB in individuals.

Bladder stone due to late clip migration after prostatic urethral lift procedure: A case report.

Background: Prostatic urethral lift (PUL) therapy is an alternative to minimally invasive and other surgeries in younger patients who want to preserve their sexual and ejaculatory functions, and in elderly male patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia who cannot be anesthetized because of the risk of anesthesia. The procedure can be performed as an outpatient and without anesthesia, and complications are few and temporary. In long-term follow-up, encrustations that require retreatment are rarely seen.

Iatrogenic bladder neck rupture due to traumatic urethral catheterization: A case report.

Background: In this article, we present a case of iatrogenic bladder neck rupture due to catheter insertion in a 94-year-old comorbid male patient.

Case Summary: The patient, who had a urethral catheter inserted in the palliative service 3 d ago, was consulted because the catheter did not work. Because the fluid given to the bladder could not be recovered, computed tomography was performed, which revealed that the catheter had passed the bladder neck first into the retrovesical area then into the intraabdominal area.

Can amniotic fluid protect developing fetal lungs against the harmful effects of oxidative stress?

Background: Preterm births cause fetuses to be born without completing the development of their organs. Due to this undesirable situation, it is the pulmonary tissue which has to be most exposed to harmful effects of extrauterine environment. Early disappearance of the prophylactic and constructive effects of amniotic fluid (AF) on developing tissues, such as pulmonary tissue, facilitates the formation of pulmonary morbidities resulting from oxygen.

Does Cardiovascular Disease Risk Decrease after Smoking Cessation in Occupational Risk Groups?

Objectives: Smoking cessation is very important for workers due to the possibility of exposure to additional environmental risks in the workplace environment. This study was performed to determine the changes in the Framingham Risk Score (FRS) and 10-year risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) of employees before smoking cessation and after 6 months.

Materials And Methods: Five hundred and sixty-two employees who want to quit smoking were included in the study.

The investigation of the protective effects of nimesulide on experimental testicular ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats.

Introduction And Objectives: Testicular ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury develops after torsion and following detorsion of the testis. Reactive oxygen species were produced and oxidative damage begins to occur due to I/R process. Nimesulide, which is a specific cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor drug, have antioxidant, antiinflammatory, analgesics and antipyretic effects.

The Prevalence of Nocturia and Nocturnal Polyuria: Can New Cutoff Values Be Suggested According to Age and Sex?

Purpose: The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of nocturia and nocturnal polyuria (NP) and to define new cutoff values according to age and sex for both conditions.

Methods: Data from a population-based prevalence survey conducted among a random sample of 2,128 adults were analyzed in this study. Participants were requested to fill out a questionnaire including the International Continence Society (ICS) definitions of lower urinary tract symptoms and the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire - Short Form.

Respiratory Systems of Dental Technicians Negatively Affected during 5 Years of Follow-Up.

Background: Dental laboratory technician is one of the professions in which dust exposure is frequently experienced and therefore the health of workers has to be monitored.

Aims: In this study, changes in the pulmonary functions and of pneumoconiosis frequencies among dental technicians after five years were investigated by comparing the results of two screenings carried out in 2008 and 2013.

Study Design: Cohort study.

The evaluation of the dust-related occupational respiratory disorders of dental laboratory technicians working in Denizli Province.

Introduction: Dental laboratory technicians (DLTs) get exposed to fibrinogen dusts that are very risky dusts in terms of health. In this study, respiration complaints, pneumoconiosis frequencies and working conditions of the dental technicians in Denizli were investigated.

Methods: All of the registered DLTs working in Denizli were included in the study.

Birth Order and Sibling Sex Ratio in a Population with High Fertility: Are Turkish Male to Female Transsexuals Different?

Western studies have consistently found that androphilic (sexually attracted to men) male-to-female transsexuals have a later birth order and a relative excess of brothers compared with appropriate control participants. However, non-Western studies on birth order and sibling sex ratio in androphilic males (transsexual or non-transsexual) are rare. The objective of the study was to test the hypothesis that androphilic male-to-female transsexuals have a late birth order and a relative excess of brothers in a non-Western culture with a higher fertility rate.

Seroprevalence of human cystic echinococcosis and risk factors in animal breeders in rural communities in Denizli, Turkey.

Introduction: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a serious public health problem in sheep-raising regions of Turkey. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of echinococcosis in rural regions of Denizli in Turkey.

Methodology: This study was undertaken in four townships in Denizli County between May 2009 and July 2009.

Prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms, overactive bladder and urinary incontinence in western Turkey: results of a population-based survey.

Objective: To estimate the prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms, urinary incontinence and overactive bladder in western Turkey.

Method: This cross-sectional, population-based survey was carried out between May and October 2012. A random sample of 2128 women and men aged ≥18 years was selected from the health registries.

Is transcranial magnetic stimulation effective in treatment-resistant combat related posttraumatic stress disorder?

Objective: To examine the effectiveness of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in patients with treatment-resistant posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with co-occurring major depression.

Methods: We examined data on 20 male combat related PTSD patients admitted to the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Clinic of Gülhane Military Medical Academy, Ankara, Turkey between January 2011 and December 2012 that received rTMS in addition to medical therapy. We obtained the data by examining the case files and hospital computer records.

Seroprevalence of hepatitis e virus among primary school children.

To investigate the seroprevalence of anti-hepatitis E virus antibody among primary school children in the two different areas of Denizli, Turkey. Methodology : Anti-HEV antibodies were investigated in 185 primary school children (91 from rural areas and 94 from urban areas of Denizli). The children were divided into two age groups as seven-year old group and fourteen-year old group.

Changes in heart rate variability before and after ECT in the treatment of resistant major depressive disorder.

Background: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) on cardiac autonomic functions (CAF) in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) using heart rate variability (HRV) analysis.

Method: Fourteen men joined the study. Nine ECTs were administered.

Prevalence of cerebrovascular disease: a door-to-door survey in West Anatolia.

The aim of this study was to demonstrate the prevalence of cerebrovascular disease (CVD), and its relation to age, education, gender, and other risk factors in the city of Denizli, Turkey. The study was performed between 2010 and 2011 in the city center, where 138,000 inhabitants >45 years were included in the research. 2,441 inhabitants were selected by cluster sampling method.

The risk of overweight and obesity in children after tonsillectomy: a cross-sectional study.

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the prevalence of tonsillectomy among secondary school children and to investigate whether tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy is a risk factor for childhood obesity. A total of 27 secondary schools with 12,296 students between the ages 11 and 17 were screened in Denizli, Turkey. We determined 129 students who had undergone tonsillectomy; each student was matched with two healthy control subjects of the same age and sex (n = 258).

The effects of age at circumcision on premature ejaculation.

Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of age at circumcision on premature ejaculation (PE).

Materials And Methods: The study included 40 healthy male controls and 40 male patients diagnosed as PE according to American Psychiatric Association criteria and the Golombok-Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction (GRISS) premature ejaculation subscale. The 2 groups were compared according to age at circumcision and GRISS score.

Evaluation of students' social hand washing knowledge, practices, and skills in a university setting.

Background: Handwashing is an effective and inexpensive way to prevent diarrhea and acute respiratory infections. This study aimed to evaluate the Turkish University students' social hand washing knowledge, practices, skills and related factors.

Materials And Methods: All existing 1st year students in the Medical and Educational Faculty, plus all existing 2nd and 3rd year students in the Medical Faculty of Pamukkale University, Denizli, Turkey, from April to May, 2010, were eligible for the study.

Quality of sexual life in men with obstructive sleep apnoea.

The study investigated the quality of sexual life of male obstructive sleep apnoea patients. Apnoea and non-apnoea participants were assessed with Golombok Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction (GRISS) and Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID) before the sleep test. Folicule Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Luteinising Hormone (LH), prolactin, testosterone and oestrogen levels were also evaluated.

Compliance status of product labels to the international code on marketing of breast milk substitutes.

The aim of this study was to determine the compliance status of product labels regarding Article 9 of the International Code on Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes (the Code) in Denizli province, Turkey. A cross-sectional study design was employed to determine the compliance status. The product labels were obtained from a convenience sample of five supermarkets, one store and 5 pharmacies in the City centre and district of Honaz.

Temperament and character properties of male psoriasis patients.

Personality properties have an effect on the onset and triggering of psoriasis. The current study aimed to examine the personality of psoriasis patients in relation to the severity of the illness. Psoriasis and healthy participants completed the Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Maudsley Obsessive Compulsive Inventory, Temperament and Character Inventory.

The prevalence of fibromyalgia among textile workers in the city of Denizli in Turkey.

Aim: Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by chronic widespread pain, fatigue, reduced sleep quality and multiple tender points. A recent population study from Turkey found the prevalence of FM as 3.6%.

Aripiprazole augmentation of serotonin reuptake inhibitors in treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder: a 10-week open-label study.

Introduction: Studies investigating the aripiprazole augmentation treatment of serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI)-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are insufficient. The aim of the present pilot study was to investigate the efficacy and tolerability of flexible doses of aripiprazole as an augmenting agent in SRI-resistant OCD patients.

Methods: OCD patients who met the criteria of this study were followed up with flexible doses of aripiprazole augmentation over a 10-week period.
