Objective: To evaluate the impact of laser irradiation of human T-cell lymphocyte in culture to determine the photobiomodulatory effects of such irradiation on gene expression, and the release of growth factors and cytokines.

Methods: The experimental study was conducted from November 2021 to April 2022 at the Postgraduate Anatomy Laboratory, Mustansiriyah University, Baghdad, Iraq, and comprised human blood samples T-cell lymphocytes were extracted and irradiated, followed by the extraction of ribonucleic acid to assess the effect of laser on gene expression of cytokines, interlukine-2 and interferon-gamma. A 589nm yellow light low-level laser beam from a diode pumping solid state laser was used at doses 30J/cm2, 50J/cm2 and 70J/cm2 for an exposure time of 15 minutes.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study identified two subgroups of schizophrenia patients using machine learning: major neurocognitive psychosis (MNP), characterized by severe cognitive deficits, negative symptoms, and various behavioral issues, and simpler neurocognitive psychosis (SNP), which is less severe.
  • - A sample of 40 healthy controls and 90 schizophrenia patients was analyzed using Soft Independent Modelling of Class Analogy (SIMCA) to differentiate these subgroups based on neurocognitive tests and immune biomarkers.
  • - Results showed significant differences between MNP and SNP, with MNP exhibiting distinct features like reduced motor speed, activated T helper-17 response, and impaired cognitive functions, suggesting a need for targeted biomarker research in each subgroup. *

Many risk factors have been listed that predispose to the occurrence of high blood pressure (BP). Although high body mass index (BMI) is a recognized risk factor for hypertension, the cutoff value for the high BMI was not taken into consideration as a predictor risk. There is no clear data on the occurrence of hypertension in Iraq in the highly educated population.

Schizophrenia patients show increased disabilities and lower quality of life (DisQoL). Nevertheless, there are no data on whether the activation of the interleukin (IL)-6, IL-23, T helper (Th)-17 axis, and lower magnesium and calcium levels impact DisQoL scores. This study recruited 90 patients with schizophrenia (including 40 with deficit schizophrenia) and 40 healthy controls and assessed the World Health Association QoL instrument-Abbreviated version and Sheehan Disability scale, Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (BACS), IL-6, IL-23, IL-17, IL-21, IL-22, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, magnesium and calcium.

Background: Schizophrenia and especially deficit schizophrenia (DSCZ) are characterized by increased activity of neuroimmunotoxic pathways and a generalized cognitive decline (G-CoDe). There is no data on whether the interleukin (IL)-6/IL-23/T helper 17 (IL-6/IL-23/Th17)-axis is more associated with DSCZ than with non-deficit schizophrenia (NDSCZ) and whether changes in this axis are associated with the G-CoDe and the phenome (a factor extracted from all symptom domains) of schizophrenia.

Methods: This study included 45 DSCZ and 45 NDSCZ patients and 40 controls and delineated whether the IL-6/IL-23/Th17 axis, trace elements (copper, zinc) and ions (magnesium, calcium) are associated with DSCZ, the G-CoDe and the schizophrenia phenome.

Objectives: To detect systolic dysfunction in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) patients by using global longitudinal strain (GLS).

Methods: This study included 46 heart failure patients: 24 with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and 22 with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), and 20 patients with similar risk factor but no symptoms or signs of heart failure, matched for age and sex, as controls. All patients were screened by echocardiography.

This is a case of Milk-AlKali syndrome in a patient who presented with the classical triad of hypercalcemia, metabolic alkalosis and renal impairment. The source of calcium was over-the-counter calcium-containing antacid (Tums®). Milk-alkali syndrome was first recognized secondary to treatment of peptic ulcer disease with milk and absorbable alkali.
