Accurate determination of glutathione (GSH) in food supplements and human biological fluids is critical for preventing disorders related to GSH imbalances. To address this, a selective and sensitive fluorometric method was developed for GSH detection using nickel nanoclusters functionalized with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) (PVP/4-MBA@Ni NCs). In this system, PVP serves as the stabilizer, while 4-MBA functions as both a stabilizer and reducing agent.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to understand the experiences of people with obesity who struggled with weight at an early age (EAO) versus those who faced challenges later in life (LAO), focusing on their interactions with healthcare practitioners (HCPs) and mental health issues like depression and anxiety.
  • Analysis of responses from 1,000 adults showed that EAO individuals had fewer weight loss attempts, less support from HCPs, and higher levels of anxiety and depression, compared to LAO individuals.
  • The conclusion emphasizes the need for HCPs to identify and address weight management issues earlier in life, specifically in adolescents, while involving parents in decision-making to improve motivation and self-confidence in overcoming obesity.*

Background: Stroke is a significant contributor to both mortality and compromised physical function. Endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) is now the recognized standard of care for anterior circulation acute ischemic stroke (AIS) with large vessel occlusion (LVO), especially when favorable brain images are evident within 24 h of symptom onset. This study elucidated the characteristics, clinical profiles, and outcomes of patients who underwent EVT for AIS.

An electrochemical sensing approach was developed for the detection of the agricultural antibiotic drug kasugamycin. The method involves the construction of an electrochemical sensor comprising molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) embedded within a carbon paste (CP) matrix. The MIPs are designed to have imprinted sites that match the size and geometry of the Cu(II)-kasugamycin coordinated complex.

Drought stress severely affects crop productivity and threatens food security. As current trends of global warming are predicted to exacerbate droughts, developing drought-resilient crops becomes urgent. Here, we used the drought-tolerant (BW35695) and drought-sensitive (BW4074) wheat varieties to investigate the physiological, biochemical, and leaf proteome responses underpinning drought tolerance.

Background: Pituitary stalk interruption syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly of the pituitary gland characterized by growth hormones deficiency (with or without other pituitary hormone deficiencies) along with radiological features of a thin or interrupted pituitary stalk, an ectopic or absent posterior pituitary, or a hypoplastic or absent anterior pituitary.

Case Presentation: A 10-year-old baby boy came with short stature. The laboratory investigations were done and showed low growth hormones and low thyroid-stimulating hormone.

  • The study investigates the link between body mass index (BMI) and oral health issues among obese female students at Taif University.
  • It involved 86 participants, showing a significant correlation between higher BMI and increased dental abnormalities, with 66.3% experiencing oral mucosal lesions.
  • The findings suggest that obesity negatively impacts oral health, with dental issues becoming more prevalent as BMI increases.

Background: The term "cellulitis" is frequently used to describe a non-necrotizing inflammation of the skin and subcutaneous tissues that is typically caused by an acute infection and does not affect the muscles or fascia. Warmth, erythema, tenderness, swelling, and localized pain are the hallmarks of cellulitis. Life-threatening and debilitating outcomes from cellulitis include necrotizing fasciitis, necrotizing hypodermitis, abscess formation, septic shock, and, in extreme cases, death.

  • The study examines how starting hemodialysis (HD) affects blood health in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), focusing on hematological and coagulation markers.
  • A total of 43 ESRD patients undergoing HD were analyzed from data collected at a hospital in Saudi Arabia, revealing significant changes in blood parameters like platelet count and volume metrics during treatment.
  • The findings suggest a potential risk of macrocytosis and thrombotic conditions in these patients, highlighting the need for careful monitoring of specific blood indicators during hemodialysis.

Residual drifts are an important measure of post-earthquake functionality in bridges and buildings, and can determine whether the structure remains fit for its intended purpose or not. This study aims at investigating numerically, through finite element (FE) analysis in ABAQUS, the cyclic response of exterior steel I beam-hollow column connection using welded shape memory alloys (SMA) bolts and seat angles. This is followed by validating the numerical model using an accredited experimental data available in the literature through different techniques, (1) SMA bolts, (2) SMA angles, (3) SMA bolts and angles.

BACKGROUND Modification of the glass fiber post (GFP) with titanium dioxide or silver particles can improve the durability and reliability of dental treatments for ensuring long-term success. This research assessed the tensile bond strength (TBS) of an adhesive system used for cementing GFPs into root dentin following the incorporation of nanoparticles of titanium dioxide (NTiO2) and silver (NAg). MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty human maxillary canines were prepared to create a 10-mm intra-radicular space for post placement from the cementoenamel junction.

Stroke is a predominant contributor to global mortality and disability and represents a complex and heterogeneous disease characterized by diverse risk factors and clinical presentations. The likelihood of stroke patients being at risk of a second stroke within the first five years is higher, especially within the initial two weeks. The distressing prospect of experiencing recurrent stroke shortly after reperfusion therapy adds an additional layer of complexity, potentially reversing prior progress.

Background: Early identification of a patient with infection who may develop sepsis is of utmost importance. Unfortunately, this remains elusive because no single clinical measure or test can reflect complex pathophysiological changes in patients with sepsis. However, multiple clinical and laboratory parameters indicate impending sepsis and organ dysfunction.

Evidence reveals that people with mental illnesses have a greater risk of experiencing oral diseases such as dry mouth and dental caries and have greater oral treatment needs. This is related to multifactorial causes such as factors related to the condition itself, symptoms, side effects of polypharmacy, and a lack of accessibility to dental services. This article aims to provide a summary of the reported prevalence of the most common mental illnesses in Saudi Arabia (SA), such as schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar disorders, and dementia.
