The term "brain fog" has emerged from the observations of neuropsychiatric conditions present in post-COVID-19 infections. This is characterized by concentration and memory problems, selective attention disorders and difficulties in executive functions, yet it is unclear how long these deficits may persist and which cognitive functions are most vulnerable. Therefore, there is a need to properly evaluate these cognitive complaints using an assessment tool that specifies their intensity and nature.

Primary immunodeficiencies are disorders of the immune system often caused by mutations of genes required for lymphocyte development. Phosphoinositide-3-kinase regulatory subunit 1 (PIK3R1) gene mutations are associated with SHORT syndrome, a rare multisystem disease. The name stands for Short stature, Hyperextensibility, Ocular depression, Rieger anomaly and Teething delay.

Mcl-1 (myeloid cell leukemia 1), a member of the Bcl-2 family, is upregulated in various types of cancer. Peptides representing the BH3 (Bcl-2 homology 3) region of pro-apoptotic proteins have been demonstrated to bind the hydrophobic groove of anti-apoptotic Mcl-1, and this interaction is responsible for regulating apoptosis. Structural studies have shown that, while there is high overall structural conservation among the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 (B-cell lymphoma 2) proteins, differences in the surface groove of these proteins facilitates binding specificity.

Article Synopsis
  • The CDC and ACIP endorse COVID-19 vaccination for patients with inborn errors of immunity (IEI), but there's limited knowledge on its safety and impact on infection severity in these patients.
  • A study involving a registry of 1,245 IEI patients across 24 countries was conducted to gather data on vaccination frequency, safety, and effectiveness, revealing that 64.7% were vaccinated, primarily with mRNA vaccines.
  • Results showed that vaccinated patients had significantly lower hospitalization and ICU admission rates when infected with COVID-19, indicating that vaccination is both safe and effective in reducing the severity of the disease in IEI patients.

Background: Quad bikes are popular recreational, four-wheeled bikes in the Middle East. Injury prevention programs targeting quad bike crashes in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) need evidence about the risk factors and behaviours associated with these crashes in the target population. This is a protocol for a study aiming to investigate quad bike rider behaviours and to assess the risk factors associated with related injuries in the UAE.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) genotype distribution varies according to the assessment method and the population targeted. This study aimed to assess HPV infection prevalence in women aged 23 to 82 with abnormal cytology attending King Fahad Medical City (KFMC), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, using retrospective data collected from January 2021 to December 2022. Cytological distribution included 155 samples of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) (n = 83), low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) (n = 46), high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) (n = 14), atypical squamous cells cannot exclude high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (ASC-H) (n = 10), and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) (n = 2).

Background: Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a genetic disorder caused by defective oxidative burst within phagocytes, manifesting as recurrent, severe infections as well as hyperinflammation.

Objective: This is the first report from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to describe the demographic, clinical, laboratory, radiological, and genetic characteristics of patients with CGD.

Methods: This is a retrospective study that was conducted at Tawam Hospital in the UAE on patients with confirmed CGD between 2017 and 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers developed a new photocatalyst made of InS doped with silver (Ag) and zinc (Zn), enhanced with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to improve solar energy utilization.
  • The new catalyst showed exceptional efficiency, achieving over 97% decomposition of organic dyes in just 10 minutes, significantly outperforming traditional InS and InS/rGO versions.
  • Additionally, it demonstrated a 120% improvement in photoelectrochemical water-splitting performance, indicating its potential for both environmental cleanup and hydrogen production.

Background: There is an increased demand for hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) to treat various diseases including combined immunodeficiencies (CID), with limited worldwide availability. Variables affecting the decision regarding CID patients' prioritization for HSCT are not known. We aimed to determine general, clinical, and immunologic factors associated with the higher risk of early death (≤6 months after diagnosis) in untransplanted CID patients.

A female, aged 55 years, was presented to the clinic concerned with her inability to function properly due to missing teeth and collapse of her vertical dimension. On examination, remaining tooth position of the upper arch was favorable for telescopic denture and remaining tooth position of the lower arch was favorable for removable prosthesis. The patient requested an aesthetic maxillary and mandibular denture with no visible metal clasps on smiling.

The mechanism of anaphylactic shock (AS) remains incompletely understood. The potassium channel blocker 4-aminopyridine (4-AP), the inhibitors of cystathionine γ-lyase (ICSE), dl-propargylglycine (DPG) or β-cyanoalanine (BCA), and the nitric oxide (NO) synthase produce vasoconstriction and could be an alternative for the treatment of AS. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the ability of L-NAME, ICSE alone or in combination with 4-AP to restore blood pressure (BP) and improve survival in ovalbumin (OVA) rats AS.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the substrate temperature for Al-doped zinc oxide (AZO) films affects the performance of heterojunction Cu(In,Ga)Se (CIGS) solar cells, revealing a complex relationship between the two.
  • Optical and electrical properties of AZO films improved with higher temperatures, but different CIGS fabrication methods showed varying optimal temperatures for AZO deposition—150 °C for the three-stage co-evaporated CIGS cells and 350 °C for the two-step sulfurization-processed cells.
  • The findings highlight the importance of optimizing AZO deposition temperature to enhance the efficiency of CIGS solar cells, leading to better performance and understanding of absorber characteristics.

Microorganisms rely on the benefit of using chemical signals called autoinducers (AIs) as a connection matter in term of population, this mechanism is known as quorum sensing (QS). Quorum sensing is responsible for formation of biofilm together with virulence in bacteria. The most known QS molecule is N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs).
