Depressive and Anxiety Disorders among the Parents of Autism in Bangladesh: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Repeated studies found that the presence of a child with autism spectrum disorder in the family raises the psychological burden among other members, especially parents. This study was conducted to find the burden of depressive and anxiety disorders among the parents of children with Autism. This cross-sectional study was conducted at the department of Psychiatry, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh from January 2016 to September 2017.

Quality of Life among Patients with Bipolar Disorder.

Bipolar Disorder is a major psychiatric disorder. It has a chronic course of remitting and relapsing episodes of mania and depression and tends to deteriorate mental and cognitive functions of patients. This disorder affects deeply the function and feelings of subjects and impacts negatively on quality of life.

Background: Recent reports revealed that the number of single mothers has been increasing day by day in Dhaka city; however, their psychological problems have not been studied yet.

Validation of the Bangla version of the Dimensional Obsessive-Compulsive Scale.

Background: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common and severe psychiatric illness which affects about 1-3% of the population across the globe. The Dimensional Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (DOCS) is a 20-item self-report instrument that assesses the severity of OCD in four dimensions.

Prevalence of Psychiatric Disorders among Female Juvenile Offenders.

Inmates of Juvenile Developmental Centers are the special group of youth population who are in conflict with law. They are vulnerable to psychiatric illness. The objective of this study was to see the prevalence and type of psychiatric disorders in institutionalized female juvenile offenders and non-offenders of same age, sex and socioeconomic group in the community.

Clozapine Can Be the Good Option in Resistant Mania.

Bipolar mood disorder is a mental disorder with a lifetime prevalence rate of about 1% in the general population and there are still a proportion of individuals who suffer from bipolar mood disorders that are resistant to standard treatment. Reporting clozapine responsive mania that was not responding to two previous consecutive atypical antipsychotics and one typical antipsychotic was aimed at. A 17-year-old male manic patient was admitted into the psychiatry inpatient department and was nonresponsive to Risperidone 12 mg daily for 4 weeks, Olanzapine 30 mg daily for 3 weeks, and Haloperidol 30 mg daily for 3 weeks, along with valproate preparation 1500 mg daily.

Quality of life in patients with major depressive disorder.

This descriptive, cross sectional, comparative and analytical study assessed the quality of life of major depressive patients and healthy controls. It was carried out in the department of psychiatry of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on patients of major depressive disorder according to structured clinical interview (SCID and diagnostic and statistical Manual) (DSM-IV) criteria. The study used world health organization quality of life scale (WHO QoL -BREF) Bangla version to assess QoL of major depressive patients.

Bangla translation, adaptation and piloting of Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale.

Standardized questionnaires for screening common health problems in the community often need to be translated for use in non-English speaking countries. There is a lack of literature documenting the process of translation of such questionnaire/scale that would enable their application in cross-cultural settings and standardization of the procedure. This paper reports the process of translation into Bangla of the widely used Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) for use in Bangladesh.
