Histological evaluation of capsules formed by texturized silicone implants with and without polyester mesh coverage (Parietex®). A study on female rats.

Purpose: To evaluate capsules formed by microtextured silicone implants with and without Parietex® mesh coverage histologically.

Methods: Sixty Wistar rats were divided in two groups (meshed and unmeshed). Each group was, then, divided into two subgroups for evaluation at 30 and 90 days.

Thoracic Wall Reconstruction: Surgical Planning in Extended Malignant Resections.

Introduction: The reconstruction of defects in thoracic wall remains a challenge for plastic surgeons. Advances in surgical treatment of illnesses of thoracic wall have been fostering the treatment of lesions within more advanced levels. Consequently, larger and more complex defects are generated, demanding soft tissue covering and framework repair.

Inframammary fold subcutaneous cushion assessment using MRI (magnetic resonance imaging).

Background: The inframammary fold (IMF) is one of the most important elements in the determination of the aesthetic of the female breast. During mastectomies, it is important to preserve the subcutaneous portion nearby the IMF, attempting that, this preservation will greatly facilitate reconstruction allowing more satisfying aesthetic results. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the thickness of the subcutaneous IMF cushion using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) acquisition images.

Evaluation of complications and flap losses in mandibular reconstruction with microvascularized fibula flap.

The mandibular defects caused by mandibulectomies can involve esthetic and functional sequelae in patients. The fibula presents positive aspects and can be used as an option for mandibular reconstruction after tumor resections or extensive traumas. Relationship between Tamoxifen and the Absorption of Subfascial Autologous Fat Grafts.

Background: In the lipofilling procedures used in breast reconstruction, there is an unpredictability in the rate of reabsorption of the grafted fat. An alternative experimental model for training in microsurgery.

Objective: to describe a new model of training in microsurgery with pig spleen after splenectomy performed by undergraduate students of the Discipline of Operative Technique of the UFPR Medical School.

Methods: after the completion of splenectomy we performed dissection of the vascular pedicle, distal and proximal to the ligation performed for removal of the spleen. After complete dissection of the splenic artery and vein with microscope, clamps were placed and the vessels were cut.

Effects of venous supercharging in deep inferior epigastric artery perforator flap.

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of venous supercharging in deep inferior epigastric artery perforator flap in rats.

Methods: 20 Wistar rats were randomized in 2 groups: control group (C), all had flaps raised based on the deep inferior epigastric perforator vessels (DIEP), and experimental group (E), which was identical to group C, except that the contralateral superficial inferior epigastric vein was also kept with the flap. Flow studies using laser Doppler flowmetry where performed daily in the four zones of the flap.
