Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effects of atorvastatin on endothelial function and coronary microcirculation in dyslipidemic patients using noninvasive echocardiographic techniques.
  • A total of 21 patients were treated with atorvastatin for 3 months, showing significant improvements in lipid profiles, endothelium-dependent vasodilation, and coronary flow reserve.
  • Results indicated strong correlations between these improvements and factors like age and baseline lipid levels, confirming atorvastatin's positive impact on vascular health.

Article Synopsis
  • Nucleoside analogues like didanosine can cause mitochondrial toxicity, with ribavirin potentially increasing didanosine exposure in HIV/HCV-coinfected patients.
  • A study of 89 patients found that 57% of those receiving both didanosine and ribavirin experienced adverse events, including high amylase levels and pancreatitis.
  • Results suggest avoiding the combination of didanosine and ribavirin due to significant toxicity risks, particularly in patients on triple nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor therapy.

Study Design: Correlation among previously validated questionnaires.

Objectives: To determine the correlation between pain, disability, and quality of life in patients with low back pain.

Summary Of Background Data: The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and the Roland-Morris (RMQ), Oswestry (OQ), and EuroQol (EQ) Questionnaires are validated instruments to assess pain, low back pain-related disability, and quality of life.

Background: A firm mattress is commonly believed to be beneficial for low-back pain, although evidence supporting this recommendation is lacking. We assessed the effect of different firmnesses of mattresses on the clinical course of patients with chronic non-specific low-back pain.

Methods: In a randomised, double-blind, controlled, multicentre trial, we assessed 313 adults who had chronic non-specific low-back pain, but no referred pain, who complained of backache while lying in bed and on rising.

Introduction: Endothelial dysfunction and increased intima-media thickness are early findings in the development of atherosclerosis that can be assessed non-invasively by echography. The aim of this study was to investigate endothelial function and intima-media thickness, and the relation between these processes and cardiovascular risk factors in patients without clinical atherosclerosis.

Patients And Method: Fifty-two subjects were studied, 39 with one or more cardiovascular risk factors and 13 with none.

Purpose: This study was undertaken to evaluate the technique of artificial sphincter for fecal incontinence, with its complications and risk factors, the functional results, and which variables derived from demographic data, preoperative studies, device characteristics, technical details, perioperative findings, and complications could influence the outcome.

Methods: The Acticon Neosphincter was implanted in 53 patients (35 females), median age 46 years, with total anal incontinence not amenable to sphincter repair or after failed sphincteroplasty. In females with associated rectocele, this was synchronously corrected.
