Electron diffraction of foam-like clusters between xenon and helium in superfluid helium droplets.

We report electron diffraction results of xenon clusters formed in superfluid helium droplets, with droplet sizes in the range of 105-106 atoms/droplet and xenon clusters from a few to a few hundred atoms. Under four different experimental conditions, the diffraction profiles can be fitted using four atom pairs of Xe. For the two experiments performed with higher helium contributions, the fittings with one pair of Xe-He and three pairs of Xe-Xe distances are statistically preferred compared with four pairs of Xe-Xe distances, while the other two experiments exhibit the opposite preference.

Semi-Autologous Corneal Transplantation with Simultaneous Bilateral Surgery: A Case Report.

The present report describes a case of semi-autologous corneal transplantation with bilateral surgery using two operating microscopes simultaneously. An 86-year-old man with history of six prior failed penetrating keratoplasties in his right eye presented with decreased vision. His other eye was deeply amblyopic but had a clear 30-year-old Castroviejo-square graft with an endothelial cell count of 803 cells/mm.

Hemorrhagic shock due to retroperitoneal hemorrhage: a rare complication of lumbar puncture.

End-of-life care for patients with prolonged disorders of consciousness following withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment: Experience and lessons from an 8-year cohort.

National guidelines provide advice for end-of-life care in patients with prolonged disorders of consciousness (PDOC). Following a Supreme Court judgment in July 2018, updated guidelines set out requirements to ensure that decisions to withdraw clinically assisted nutrition and hydration (CANH) are made responsibly in the absence of a mandatory application to the court.This retrospective 8-year cohort analysis of prospectively collected clinical data examines the experience and lessons learned from implementing the guidelines in the 80 PDOC patients who have died in one tertiary centre since 2014.

The first assessment of the genetic diversity and structure of the endangered West Indian manatee in Cuba.

The coastal waters of Cuba are home to a small, endangered population of West Indian manatee, which would benefit from a comprehensive characterization of the population's genetic variation. We conducted the first genetic assessment of Cuban manatees to determine the extent of the population's genetic structure and characterize the neutral genetic diversity among regions within the archipelago. We genotyped 49 manatees at 18 microsatellite loci, a subset of 27 samples on 1703 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), and sequenced 59 manatees at the mitochondrial control region.

Novel and Structurally Diversified Bacterial DNA Gyrase Inhibitors Discovered through a Fluorescence-Based High-Throughput Screening Assay.

Bacterial DNA gyrase, a type IIA DNA topoisomerase that plays an essential role in bacterial DNA replication and transcription, is a clinically validated target for discovering and developing new antibiotics. In this article, based on a supercoiling-dependent fluorescence quenching (SDFQ) method, we developed a high-throughput screening (HTS) assay to identify inhibitors targeting bacterial DNA gyrase and screened the National Institutes of Health's Molecular Libraries Small Molecule Repository library containing 370,620 compounds in which 2891 potential gyrase inhibitors have been identified. According to these screening results, we acquired 235 compounds to analyze their inhibition activities against bacterial DNA gyrase using gel- and SDFQ-based DNA gyrase inhibition assays and discovered 155 new bacterial DNA gyrase inhibitors with a wide structural diversity.

Potent Inhibition of Bacterial DNA Gyrase by Digallic Acid and Other Gallate Derivatives.

Bacterial DNA gyrase, an essential enzyme, is a validated target for discovering and developing new antibiotics. Here we screened a pool of polyphenols and discovered that digallic acid is a potent DNA gyrase inhibitor. We also found that several food additives based on gallate, such as dodecyl gallate, potently inhibit bacterial DNA gyrase.

A laser parameter study on enhancing proton generation from microtube foil targets.

The interaction of an intense laser with a solid foil target can drive [Formula: see text] TV/m electric fields, accelerating ions to MeV energies. In this study, we experimentally observe that structured targets can dramatically enhance proton acceleration in the target normal sheath acceleration regime. At the Texas Petawatt Laser facility, we compared proton acceleration from a [Formula: see text] flat Ag foil, to a fixed microtube structure 3D printed on the front side of the same foil type.

Call on me! Undergraduates' perceptions of voluntarily asking and answering questions in front of large-enrollment science classes.

Allowing students to voluntarily ask and answer questions in front of the whole class are common teaching practices used in college science courses. However, few studies have examined college science students' perceptions of these practices, the extent to which students choose to engage in these practices, and what discourages students from participating. In this study, we surveyed 417 undergraduates at a research-intensive institution about their experiences asking and answering questions in large-enrollment college science courses.
