Background: The SMILE study addresses a significant need in palliative oncology by evaluating the non-inferiority of a shortened, 3-fraction stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) schedule against the traditional 5-fraction approach for non-spine bone metastases in terms of pain control. Optimizing SBRT could significantly enhance the quality of life for patients by providing effective pain relief while minimizing treatment sessions.

Methods: This international, multicenter phase III trial will randomize 162 patients to receive either a 3-fraction regimen (9 Gy per fraction) or a standard 5-fraction regimen (7 Gy per fraction).

Growth-promoting antibiotics have been used in cattle, but concern about antimicrobial overuse has prompted a re-evaluation of this practice. To evaluate changes in the ruminal microbiota of feedlot cattle by virginiamycin, a total of 76 crossbreed beef cattle from 2 batches of cattle at different sampling periods (B1 and B2) were divided into 2 groups: one receiving virginiamycin in their diet (ATB) and the other receiving the same diet without any growth promoter (CON). The use of virginiamycin was associated with significant changes in the diversity and composition of the ruminal microbiota of cattle in B1, but not in cattle in B2.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on a significant pathogen affecting nursing calves globally, analyzing the gut microbiota of dairy calves within their first month of life on a Brazilian farm.
  • - Researchers collected fecal samples from 30 calves and tracked their fecal scores, discovering that all calves experienced diarrhea starting on day 5, with all testing positive for the pathogen at some point.
  • - The findings indicate that while microbiota richness typically increases as calves age, this growth is hindered by diarrhea, which also alters the composition of the gut microbiota.

Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is defined as the cessation or reduction in heavy and prolonged alcohol use within several hours to a few days of cessation. The recommended first-line therapy for AWS ranging from mild to severe or complicated remains benzodiazepines; in cases where benzodiazepines are not adequate in controlling persistent autonomic hyperactivity or anxiety, dexmedetomidine could be utilized. The possible advantage of dexmedetomidine compared to benzodiazepines is that it does not cause respiratory depression, thus reducing the risk of intubation and hospitalization in the ICUs, with the potential reduction in healthcare costs.

Optical anisotropy is a fundamental attribute of some crystalline materials and is quantified via birefringence. A birefringent crystal gives rise to not only asymmetrical light propagation but also attenuation along two distinct polarizations, a phenomenon called linear dichroism (LD). Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials with high in-plane and out-of-plane anisotropy have garnered interest in this regard.

The genus, subfamily, family, contains ovine gammaherpesvirus 2 (OvGHV2), the cause of sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever (SA-MCF). Members of the genus associated with the development of malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) in their respective hosts share the 15A antigenic epitope, are conserved within the DNA polymerase gene and are collectively referred to as the malignant catarrhal fever virus (MCFV) complex. The ability of MCFV and/or OvGHV2 to produce abortions in ruminants is currently unknown, with little documentation of infections by these agents in bovine fetuses.

The microbiota plays an important role in numerous physiological processes, pathogenesis, development, and metabolism in different animal species. In humans, several studies have demonstrated an association between the vaginal microbiota and fertility rates, and even success in assisted reproduction techniques. In the context of cattle reproduction, although few studies have addressed the microbiota in a healthy state (which is not associated with diseases that affect the reproductive tract of cows), changes in its composition also seem to influence fertility.

Observation of interlayer, charge transfer (CT) excitons in van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) based on 2D-2D systems has been well investigated. While conceptually interesting, these charge transfer excitons are highly delocalized and spatially localizing them requires twisting layers at very specific angles. This issue of localizing the CT excitons can be overcome via making nanoplate-2D material heterostructures (N2DHs) where one of the components is a spatially quantum confined medium.
