Neutrophilic urticarial dermatosis (NUD) is an uncommon and not well understood disease. We report a 24-year-old female with persistent present with pruritic and painful urticarial plaques unresponsive to convential treatment. Histopathologically, it demonstrates a perivascular and interstitial neutrophilic infiltrate with leukocytoclasia without evidence of vasculitis or dermal edema consistent with neutrophilic urticarial dermatosis.

Methods: In this comparative, retrospective study, 603 eyes of 344 patients with myopia underwent implantation of either an Artisan iris-fixated phakic intraocular lens IOL (Artisan; Ophtec, Groningen, Netherlands) (Artisan group) or a Visian implantable collamer lens (ICL; STAAR Surgical Company, Monrovia, CA) (ICL group) between June 2005 and December 2013. Preoperative, operative, and postoperative clinical data were collected on the incidence of retinal complications, including rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) or choroidal neovascular membrane (CNVM).
Parabens have been used as preservatives in foods, injectables, and topical preparations for nearly 10 decades. View Article and Find Full Text PDFSeveral major antiepileptic drugs, including carbamazepine, phenytoin and phenobarbital, induce xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes via activation of nuclear receptors, including pregnane X receptor (NR1I2) and constitutive androstane receptor (NR1I3). Via activation of these xenobiotic sensors, antiepileptic drugs may also induce the expression of efflux transporters such as P-glycoprotein (Pgp) in different tissues, including intestine, liver, kidney and brain. Increased expression of Pgp in brain capillary endothelial cells, which form the blood-brain barrier, could limit the penetration of antiepileptic drugs into the brain and therefore decrease their therapeutic efficacy.

The purpose of our investigation was to examine how the fatty acid pattern of cellular membranes influences the activities and cellular distribution of the PLD1 and PLD2 isoforms. Expression of GFP-tagged PLD1 and PLD2 in COS-1 cells that were stimulated with mastoparan after cultivation in 20 micromol linoleic (C18:2n6) or linolenic (C18:3n3) acid for 4 d demonstrated that PLD1 dramatically alters its cellular distribution and is redistributed from intracellular vesicles to the cell surface.

We show that cholesterol depletion by treatment with methyl-beta-cyclodextrin (m beta CD) affects infection by SARS-CoV to the same extent as infection by vesicular stomatitis virus-based pseudotypes containing the surface glycoprotein S of SARS-CoV (VSV-Delta G-S). Therefore, the role of cholesterol for SARS-CoV infection can be assigned to the S protein and is unaffected by other coronavirus proteins.
