Monkeypox, a member of the genu, has been the center of global attention since it has been declared a public health emergency by the World Health Organization. Typically, it is a self-limiting disease; however, it can occasionally have severe presentations in patients with underlying conditions, such as HIV, malignancy, and transplantation. In this article, we will present a case of an immunocompetent patient with a severe presentation of monkeypox.

Although preventative measures for CVD among the general population are well described, information is limited about CVD prevention among PLWH. The goal of this study was to characterize the prevalence of CVD in our population and to assess the use of primary and secondary prevention.

We examined associations among PTSD symptoms, posttraumatic cognitions, and alcohol intoxication frequency in 290 men who have sex with men (MSM), who reported a history of childhood sexual abuse (CSA). Using a bootstrap approach, we examined the indirect effects of PTSD symptoms on alcohol intoxication frequency through posttraumatic cognitions regarding the self, world, and self-blame.

Methods: To establish the sequence of metastases, phylogenetic relationships among the ovarian and peritoneal carcinomas were determined from single-nucleotide variations (SNVs) in nine tumor regions from each patient with pelvic HGS carcinomas.
The decision to intervene for internal carotid stenosis often depends on the degree of stenosis seen on duplex ultrasound (US). The aim of this study is to compare the diagnostic accuracy of two criteria: modified University of Washington (UW) and 2003 Carotid Consensus Panel (CCP). All patients undergoing US in an accredited (IAC) vascular laboratory from January 2010 to June 2015 were reviewed ( n=18,772 US exams).

Although the technique of placing endovascular stent grafts has evolved since the first grafts, the basic principles remain the same. Use of endografts is limited by anatomic criteria, and advances in graft design have allowed for more widespread use for a broader patient range.

Researchers have documented that the transition process is challenging for adolescents/young adults. To ensure successful transition, a formal transition protocol is needed.

Methods: We performed a retrospective review of a prospectively collected endovascular aneurysm repair database. All patients who underwent parallel stent grafting or fenestrated repair with upper extremity arterial access were included.
Background: We seek to present our experience with innovative abdominal wall arteriovenous access grafts for patients who have run out of traditional dialysis access options.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed our cohort of patients who have undergone creation of abdominal wall grafts. In all patients, an iliac artery was used for inflow and either an iliac vein or the distal inferior vena cava (IVC) was use for the outflow.
Determining the severity of acute mesenteric ischemia or reperfusion injury can be problematic, as early visceral hypoperfusion is difficult to detect by traditional laboratory testing. Likewise gauging the success of resuscitation and therapeutic intervention is also challenging to determine by laboratory analysis alone. Investigators continue to actively search for plasma biomarkers that will aide clinicians in identifying the early microvascular changes associated with visceral splanchnic malperfusion in an effort to allow for earlier diagnosis and expedient intervention in order to minimize overall intestinal ischemia and reperfusion injury for the potential of improving clinical outcomes.

We present the case of a 64-year-old man with clearly documented accelerated aortic and iliac artery aneurysm dilation after two rounds of transarterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma. Given the large size with rapid growth of his aneurysms and inability to be listed for transplant consideration before repair, he was offered endovascular repair and was successfully treated.

These AVFs are often deemed unsalvageable. We hypothesize that long-segment plication in these patients can be performed safely with acceptable short-term AVF salvage rates.

Despite wide interest in the group, as yet no analysis of blackbird relationships has achieved comprehensive species-level sampling or found robust support for most intergeneric relationships. Using mitochondrial gene sequences from all ∼108 currently recognized species and six additional distinct lineages, together with strategic sampling of four nuclear loci and whole mitochondrial genomes, we were able to resolve most relationships with high confidence.

We sought to determine if community health workers could improve clinical outcomes among vulnerable African-Americans living with HIV in Miami, Florida. We recruited 91 medically indigent persons with HIV viral loads ≥1,000 and/or a CD4 cell count ≤350.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWhole mitochondrial genome sequences have been used in studies of animal phylogeny for two decades, and current technologies make them ever more available, but methods for their analysis are lagging and best practices have not been established. Most studies ignore variation in base composition and evolutionary rate within the mitogenome that can bias phylogenetic inference, or attempt to avoid it by excluding parts of the mitogenome from analysis. In contrast, partitioned analyses accommodate heterogeneity, without discarding data, by applying separate evolutionary models to differing portions of the mitogenome.

Although specialized programs for transition to adult care have been reported for persons with cystic fibrosis, diabetes mellitus, sickle cell disease, and other chronic illnesses, there are few published reports of integral programs designed to transition adolescents who were infected with HIV during the adolescent period to adult HIV services. This article describes a model of transition from a University-based, federally funded adolescent HIV program to adult HIV services, addresses barriers to transition, and provides strategies and recommendations for improving adherence to the transition process.
