Background: Microbial mats are a good model system for ecological and evolutionary analysis of microbial communities. There are more than 20 alkaline hot springs on the banks of the Barguzin river inflows. Water temperature reaches 75 °C and pH is usually 8.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the microbial composition of saline lakes in the Novosibirsk region and how it relates to the physical-chemical parameters of their waters.
  • The lakes were categorized into chloride or chloride-sulfate types, with varying salinity levels and diverse microbial communities, including dominant cyanobacteria and a notable presence of Archaea.
  • Findings suggest that microbial abundance is influenced by water salinity and highlight the unique microbial communities, making them valuable for further ecological and microbiological research.

Microorganism identification by MALDI TOF mass-spectrometry is based on the comparison of the mass spectrum of the studied organism with those of reference strains. It is a rapid and reliable method. However, commercial databases and programs are mostly designed for identification of clinically important strains and can be used only for particular mass spectrometer models.

Article Synopsis
  • * Using pyrosequencing, the study found that bacteria make up over 95% of the microbial community, with significant proportions of thermophilic bacteria like Caldiserica and Dictyoglomi.
  • * The analysis reveals that the benthic community shares similarities with the planktonic community but differs quantitatively, and it highlights diverse phylogenetic groups within a well-developed trophic system.

A Gram-reaction-positive, motile, thermophilic spore-forming strain, G1w1(T), was isolated from a hot spring of the Valley of Geysers, Kamchatka (Russia). Based on data from the present polyphasic taxonomic study, including phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA and spo0A gene sequences, the strain is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Geobacillus, for which the name Geobacillus icigianus sp. nov.
