Pathogenesis of the disease is associated with destruction and death of neurons that produce the neurotransmitter dopamine. The precursor to dopamine, which crosses the protective blood-brain barrier, is the amino acid 3, 4-dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine - levodopa, L-DOPA.
