Whereas the 2010 European consensus recommendations for ECG interpretation in young athletes state that ATWI beyond lead V warrants further investigation, the prevalence and significance of ATWI have never been reported in a large population of asymptomatic whites.

Objectives: This study sought to investigate the effect of different types of exercise on left ventricular (LV) geometry in a large group of female and male athletes.
Background: Studies assessing cardiac adaptation in female and male athletes indicate that female athletes reveal smaller increases in LV wall thickness and cavity size compared with male athletes. However, data on sex-specific changes in LV geometry in athletes are scarce.
Background: Accurate knowledge of causes of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in athletes and its precipitating factors is necessary to establish preventative strategies.
Objectives: This study investigated causes of SCD and their association with intensive physical activity in a large cohort of athletes.
Methods: Between 1994 and 2014, 357 consecutive cases of athletes who died suddenly (mean 29 ± 11 years of age, 92% males, 76% Caucasian, 69% competitive) were referred to our cardiac pathology center.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a hereditary primary myocardial disease that is most commonly due to mutations within genes encoding sarcomeric contractile proteins and is characterised by left ventricular hypertrophy in the absence of a cardiac or systemic cause. Although the overall prognosis is relatively good with an annual mortality rate <1 %, the propensity to potentially fatal ventricular arrhythmias is the most feared complication. The identification of patients at risk of arrhythmogenic sudden cardiac death (SCD) is an essential component in disease management.

Progressive intralysosomal accumulation of neutral glycosphingolipids in a variety of cell types triggers a cascade of pathophysiological events including cellular death, compromised energy metabolism, small vessel injury, K(Ca)3.1 channel dysfunction in endothelial cells, oxidative stress, impaired autophagosome maturation, tissue ischemia and, importantly, development of irreversible cardiac and renal tissue fibrosis, leading to major multisystemic manifestations.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe aim of this study was to assess exercise test results and efficacy of therapy with a β blocker (acebutolol) in ryanodine receptor type 2 (RyR2) mutation carriers with documented ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) and long-term follow-up. Twenty RyR2 mutation carriers belonging to 8 families and regularly followed at our center were analyzed using a study protocol involving electrocardiography, exercise tests off and on β-blocker therapy, 2-dimensional echocardiography, and signal-averaged electrocardiography. Off-therapy exercise testing triggered the onset of VAs at different heart rates (mean 132 ± 13 beats/min) with various patterns that worsened while exercising and disappeared immediately after stopping.

Objective: This study sought to estimate the occurrence of compound and double heterozygotes for mutations in desmosomal proteins encoding genes in a cohort of ARVC/D Italian index cases, and to assess the clinical phenotype of mutations carriers.
Methods: Fourty-two consecutive ARVC/D index cases who fulfilled the International Task Force diagnostic criteria were screened for mutations in PKP2, DSP, DSG2, DSC2, and JUP genes by denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC) and direct sequencing.
Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is a cardiac disease characterized by progressive myocardial atrophy and fibrofatty replacement. Standard electrocardiograms (ECGs) and signal-averaged ECGs (SAECGs) were relatively low cost and repeatable diagnostic tools. In this study, ECGs and SAECGs of patients with ARVC were analyzed with the aim to assess the diagnostic capability of these noninvasive techniques.
