The Influence of Valve Leaflet Stiffness Variability on Aortic Wall Shear Stress.

Aortic stenosis is a common cardiac condition that impacts the aorta's hemodynamics downstream of the affected valve. We sought to better understand how non-uniform stiffening of a stenotic aortic valve would affect the wall shear stress (WSS) experienced by the walls of the aorta and the residence time near the valve. Several experimental configurations were created by individually stiffening leaflets of a polymer aortic valve.
