Multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria in patients with COVID-19: An epidemiological and clinical study.

Epidemiological data regarding the incidence of secondary multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative infection in patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Brazil are still ambiguous. Thus, a case-control study was designed to determine factors associated with the acquisition of MDR Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) in patients with and without COVID-19 and describe the mortality rates and clinical features associated with unfavorable outcomes. In total, we assessed 280 patients admitted to Brazilian intensive care units from March/2020 to December/2021.

Antimicrobial peptides against polymyxin-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae: a patent review.

The spread of polymyxin-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae strains represents an emerging health challenge, limiting treatment options for the patients. Thus, the development of new antimicrobials is an urgent requirement. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a large class of compounds that are part of innate immune response; these peptides are promising compounds in the field of antimicrobial resistance and are present in all organisms.

CHIVA to spare the small and great saphenous veins after wrong-site surgery on a normal saphenous vein: a case report.

CHIVA (Cure Conservatrice et Hemodynamique de l'Insufficience Veineuse en Ambulatoire) is a type of operation for varicose veins that avoids destroying the saphenous vein and collaterals. We report a case of CHIVA treatment of two saphenous veins to spare these veins. The patient previously had a normal great saphenous vein stripped in error in a wrong-site surgery, while two saphenous veins that did have reflux were not operated.

Microscopic evidences that bone marrow mononuclear cell treatment improves sciatic nerve regeneration after neurorrhaphy.

Cell therapy constitutes a possibility for improving nerve regeneration, increasing the success of nerve repair. We evaluate the use of mononuclear cells in the regeneration of the sciatic nerve after axotomy followed by end-to-end neurorrhaphy. Forty adult male Wistar rats (250-300 g) were divided into four groups: (1) sham, (2) neurorrhaphy: the sciatic nerve was sectioned and repaired using epineural sutures, (3) culture medium: after the suture, received an injection of 10 μL of culture medium into the nerve, and (4) mononuclear cell: after the suture, a concentration of 3 × 10(6) of mononuclear cell was injected in epineurium region.

Ultrasonic rat vocalizations during the formalin test: a measure of the affective dimension of pain?

The emission of ultrasonic vocalization (USV) by rats submitted to the formalin test has not yet been demonstrated. We performed two experiments to establish the formalin concentration to induce USV and the relationship of USV emission with motor behaviors and the effects of morphine and naloxone on USV during the formalin test. Male Wistar rats were used.

Background And Objectives: Increasingly, anesthesiologists are performing preoperative evaluation. This study aimed at transversally evaluating external and internal clients satisfaction with Santa Casa de Porto Alegre outpatient preoperative evaluation department (APOA).

Methods: A questionnaire was applied for one month to external clients (patients) before and after evaluation, and internal clients (anesthesiologists and surgeons) to evaluate their satisfaction with the preoperative evaluation department.
