Unlabelled: Giant cell arteritis (GCA) may manifest with aggressive intracranial stenosis resistant to medical therapy, and patients may develop refractory neurologic deficits and cerebral infarcts, making GCA a life-threatening condition. We report the case of a 68-year-old woman recently diagnosed with GCA, medicated with prednisolone 60 mg daily. Two weeks later, the patient was admitted to our Stroke Unit after a sudden episode of global aphasia.

Purpose: To test the association between the Sense of Coherence (SOC) and the fear of public speaking in university students.

Method: Cross-sectional study was carried out with a sample of 1124 undergraduate students of a Brazilian public university. An online questionnaire was used divided into three blocks: the first evaluated the sociodemographic data and the somatic symptoms of the fear of public speaking; the second evaluated the SOC, through the SOC-13 questionnaire; and the third was composed by the Scale for Self-Assessment in Public Speaking (SSPS), with questions that point out cognitive aspects of this activity.

Purpose: The objective of this review is to provide a structured approach to the main white matter commissures, their anatomic and radiological definition and disease implications.

Methods: The Pubmed database and The JAMA Network were used for the literature review and the following terms were searched using Sort by: Best Match and Sort by: Most Recent: telencephalic commissure, forebrain commissure anatomy, fornix anatomy, commissure of fornix, posterior commissure, corpus callosum, commissural agenesis, Probst bundle, corpus callosum disorders review, corpus callosum diseases review, Marchiafava-Bignami, Alzheimer's disease and Forel commissure; 36 papers were selected, one excluded due to the language barrier.

Results: The interhemispheric communication in the brain is achieved via the brain commissures, bundles of white matter linking the two cerebral hemispheres.

Background: There is continuing controversy regarding the optimal regimen for neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in bladder cancer.

Patients And Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of 241 consecutive bladder cancer patients who received a combination of methotrexate, vinblastine, doxorubicin and cisplatin (MVAC) using a standard (52 patients) or an accelerated schedule (189 patients) as NAC before radical cystectomy in 17 centres of the French GEnito-urinary TUmour Group from March 2004-May 2013.

Results: The median age was 62 years.

To determine transmission rates for neonatal conjunctivitis causative microorganisms in Angola, we analyzed 312 endocervical and 255 conjunctival samples from mothers and newborns, respectively, during 2011-2012. Transmission rates were 50% for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae and 10.5% for Mycoplasma genitalium.

Germ cell tumors present contrasting biological and molecular features compared to many solid tumors, which may partially explain their unusual sensitivity to chemotherapy. Reduced DNA repair capacity and enhanced induction of apoptosis appear to be key factors in the sensitivity of germ cell tumors to cisplatin. Despite substantial cure rates, some patients relapse and subsequently die of their disease.

Hormone-refractory prostate cancer is an advanced stage of the metastatic disease; it has a poor prognosis and a short median survival, about 9 to 18 months. The current article is based on a literature review regarding the prognostic factors and medical treatments, with a focus on recent advances in chemotherapy. With the use of docetaxel that increases the median survival of this disease and improves the symptoms, new clinical protocols have been developed, with promising results; these protocols propose a combination with calcitriol or antiangiogenic agents.

We present a novel readout scheme for gold nanoparticle-based DNA microarrays relying on "Laser-Induced Scattering around a NanoAbsorber". It provides direct counting of individual nanoparticles present on each array spot and stable signals, without any silver enhancement. Given the detection of nanometer-sized particles, which minimize the steric hindrance, the linear dynamic range of the method is particularly large and well suited for microarray detection.

A quantitative PCR method is proposed that combines the use of a competitive internal standard with the sandwich hybridization of the products. The variability of the PCR efficiency was corrected using a specifically designed internal standard, competitive not only for the PCR amplification, but also for the hybridization on capture probes fixed onto microwells. The design of such standard gave a dynamic range extending from 30-1 million copies of target DNA when the internal standard copy number was fixed to 1000 using a simple colorimetric detection.

In this study, we compared the efficiency of capture DNA probes covalently bound onto magnetic beads or microplates for their hybridization with target human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) DNA amplicons. Polystyrene supports were first aminated by wet chemistry to allow covalent grafting of the capture probes. The level of amines grafted was three times higher on beads than on microwells.

The present study was designed to elucidate the possible beneficial effects of naftidrofuryl on ischemia-induced endothelium damage. For this purpose, an in vitro model was developed wherein human endothelial cells isolated from umbilical vein were submitted to hypoxia. Long-term hypoxia incubation (6 h) induced cell mortality, and naftidrofuryl strongly protected endothelial cells against this mortality in a dose-dependent manner and at concentrations as low as 10(-9) M.
