Article Synopsis
  • The study presents a low-cost, portable near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) method for evaluating the quality of ethanol-based hand sanitizers used during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Two approaches were developed: a qualitative method to detect significant composition issues, particularly with ethanol levels, and a quantitative method to accurately measure ethanol content in various sanitizer formulations.
  • Results showed that the first method could identify non-conforming samples, while the second achieved precise ethanol content measurements with minimal sample requirements and quick analysis times, also assessing how quickly ethanol evaporates from different formulations.

The essential oil of Plectranthus amboinicus and its chemotypes, carvacrol and thymol, were evaluated on the germination and root and aerial growth of Lactuca sativa and Sorghum bicolor and in acting on the cell cycle of meristematic root cells of L. sativa. The main component found in the oil by analysis in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography flame ionization detection was carvacrol (88.

Vaccinia virus (VACV), the etiological agent of bovine vaccinia (BV), is widespread in Brazil and present in most of the milk-producing regions. We conducted a horizontal study of BV in Bahia, a state of Brazil in which the production of milk is increasing. During 2011, human and bovine clinical samples were collected during outbreaks for BV diagnosis, virus isolation and molecular analysis.
