Development of a fast and simple method to identify pure Arabica coffee and blended coffee by Infrared Spectroscopy.

Abstract: Coffee is the second most consumed beverage in the world and Brazil is the biggest coffee producer. The main coffee species are Arabica () and Robusta (). Arabica presents superior sensorial characteristics, as flavor and aroma, and Robusta is less expensive to produce.

Synthesis and characterization of mead: from the past to the future and development of a new fermentative route.

In ancient times, mead was produced by fermentation of honey in water and presented low quality, undesired by-products, off-flavors, and the production was time consuming. In this study, nine experiments were performed to improve the fermentation and mead characteristics. Distillation was not part of the production process and it was performed in this work to produce a new spirit.

Sol-gel methods for synthesis of aluminosilicates for dental applications.

Introduction: Amorphous aluminosilicates glasses containing fluorine, phosphorus and calcium are used as a component of the glass ionomer dental cement. This cement is used as a restorative, basis or filling material, but presents lower mechanical resistance than resin-modified materials. The Sol-Gel method is a possible route for preparation of glasses with lower temperature and energy consumption, with higher homogeneity and with uniform and nanometric particles, compared to the industrial methods Glass ionomer cements with uniform, homogeneous and nanometric particles can present higher mechanical resistance than commercial ionomers.

[Sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis after peritoneal dialysis].

Patients with chronic renal failure in use of peritoneal dialysis (PD) are subject to various complications of the renal replacement therapy. We report a rare complication of PD in which the peritoneum, after years of contact with hypertonic dialysate, is gradually replaced by fibrous tissue. This patient had several complications after initiation of PD including a bacterial peritonitis, tertiary hyperparathyroidism (being treated with parathyroidectomy 2) and cholelithiasis (being treated with laparoscopic cholecystectomy).

[Unilateral retinitis pigmentosa secondary to eye injury: case report].

Retinitis pigmentosa is a group of diseases caused by genetic changes that lead to progressive degeneration of photoreceptors, rods mainly. In general, it has bilateral presentation. This study is a case report of a patient with unilateral involvement of the retina, similar to the characteristics of retinitis pigmentosa, and an old ocular trauma history.

Synthesis and biocompatibility of an experimental glass ionomer cement prepared by a non-hydrolytic sol-gel method.

The aims of this study were to demonstrate the synthesis of an experimental glass ionomer cement (GIC) by the non-hydrolytic sol-gel method and to evaluate its biocompatibility in comparison to a conventional glass ionomer cement (Vidrion R). Four polyethylene tubes containing the tested cements were implanted in the dorsal region of 15 rats, as follows: GI - experimental GIC and GII - conventional GIC. The external tube walls was considered the control group (CG).
