Background: Broad-spectrum antimicrobials are given prophylactically post-transplant, although these agents are a risk factor for multidrug-resistant (MDR) infections and Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). This study aimed to determine whether an association exists between the duration of antimicrobials given early post-transplant and the development of MDR infections or CDI.

Methods: A single-center retrospective analysis was performed on lung transplants from September 2009 to August 2014.

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "Alexandra R Whiddon"

  • - Alexandra R Whiddon's research primarily focuses on the use of postoperative antimicrobials in lung transplantation, examining their impact on the development of multidrug-resistant (MDR) infections and Clostridium difficile infections (CDI) in patients.
  • - In a study involving 500 non-cystic fibrosis lung transplant patients, Whiddon's analysis found a correlation between the duration of broad-spectrum antimicrobial use and the incidence of MDR infections and CDI.
  • - The research emphasizes the importance of evaluating antimicrobial prophylaxis strategies in the context of increasing antibiotic resistance, suggesting a need for optimized postoperative care protocols in lung transplant recipients.
